I have a Quarter pound in my RG550 complementing the JB/Jazz pair. In the other 550 I have the BW pair along with the stock Ibanez pickup, which sounds quite good in positions 2 and 4. I rarely used the middle pickup on its own anyway.
@Micah36 what is the exact model of your switch? Is it definitely 3SWLSC? I have 3SWLSP5 in my RG470 and I wired the humbuckers like this:
Black -> HOT
Red & white -> TAP
Green & bare -> GND
Low output pickup - compressor - noise gate - amp
Vs
High output pickup - amp
Why add all these extra moving parts to get you there? Except, of course, if changing the low output pickup for something else isn't an option for whatever reason.
As @Rex_Rocker wrote, reduces the gain and takes the fizz out, it sounds punchier and more defined. It "feels" warmer now, but I have no evidence other than my own perception. I did the same V1 replacement in the DSL40CR with similar results. I can now use the whole gain range on the 40CR OD1...
JB into:
- Maxon OD-9 or OD808X into 5150III 6L6 50w with 12at7wc in V1, or
- SD1 into JCM800 studio with Hot Mod Evo V2
Both absolutely crushing. JB rocks!
Don't know about the US, but in Australia we have a number of "boutique" - as in small shop, not expensive just because, aimed at lawyers and tech bros - local winders that obviously produce a lot less than Duncan, or even PRS, that sound every bit as good or better as those and cost less...
Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that aftermarket PRS pickups are more expensive than the "equivalent" middle-of-the-road Duncans or Dimarzios?
Sounds like a JB that's sitting too close to the strings, have you tried to back it off a bit? None of my 3 JBs with various magnets and in various guitars sounded like that ever.
That looks sooo cool! But I can't unsee the saddles alignment, was it before you intonated it? The missing locking nuts may indicate it wasn't a finished product yet when you took the photo 🙂
