  • Hello Artie Too, a couple of years ago, you answered a question in one of the the threads about wiring 3 concentric / stacked knob for an H, H, H configured guitar .
You gave me this diagram .

No prob. So, to make sure I understand, you want 3 humbuckers, run to 3 concentric pots, run to a standard Fender 5-way, so that the 3 pups act in the same sequence as a Strat would act?

These messages are coming in, in weird order. Let me chew on this. I'll try to get you something tomorrow.
    Hi Artie,
I have no problem sending you some vintage NOS tubes in exchange for what you are giving me if you are interested. What I have is some National branded computer grade 5963 (12AU7) and 5965 (12AV7) tubes. A 12AV7 has a gain factor of less than a 12AT7 and can be used to give you more clean headroom in the PI or to mellow the amount of reverb. Let me know what you might be interested in.

This is the amp that uses 12BH7 for the output for a 1 watt max output. I built it and had to send it out to Ben Fargen to redo the lead dress and I had a component 180 degrees out. (My first attempt at amp building)

I have a H&K TubeMeister 5, that uses a cheapy Chinese 12AX7 and 12BH7 that has never sounded that great. If you had a couple that could replace those, (or an equivalent), that would be cool. Lower gain, is fine.

P.S. Due to gas cost these days, I was trying to wait 'til I was making a PO run anyway to send these out. If nothing comes up, I'll get them out before the week is over.

Cool amp, BTW. How's she sound now?
Would you be interested in some tube swaps? I have some NOS 12AX7 and variants I'd be willing to trade for. The specifics I would have to go out to tube stash and see what there is. I also have some NOS National branded 6L6s.

Thanks Jeff. But right now I'm trying to fund other projects. And I have some NOS 12 AX7's. But, if these don't sell, I'll keep it in the back of mind.
Sorry to bring up such an old post but I would love to see your take on the nighthawk wiring without the floating coil issue. Small world, Might be right around the corner from ya here in Jacksonville too!

    Re: Nighthawk-style wiring (SuperSwitch content)

Whew! That wiring makes my head spin.

Basically, what you're saying in the first paragraph is correct. Your color translation is good-to-go. On a Duncan humbucker, if you connect red/white to ground, you'll get the stud coil. Red/white to "hot", or output, will give you the screw coil. I'm not sure which would be which with the pickups in that diagram.

However, they are doing something that is less than ideal in that wiring scheme. (If NightHawk owners aren't experiencing excessive hum and noise in the single mode, then you can ignore this.)

In the above wiring, when a pickup is split, it leaves the unterminated coil hanging out on the "hot" side of the circuit. Like a "noise" antenna. Look at the following diagram:

In the top two figures, you de-select a coil by shorting it out. In the third, you leave one coil hanging, but it's hanging on the ground side of the circuit. Not ideal, but probably not a problem. (Still could be if you use a very long guitar cable.) In the last one, the unused coil is hanging on the "hot" side of the circuit. As is done in your NightHawk wiring.

Let me study your diagram some more and see if I can come up with a better way to do it that preserves the full functionality, but helps in the "noise" dept. (Using Duncan colors, of course.)

I'll look at this again when I get a chance. Covid, unfortunately, has hit close to home.
Hi Artie - posted this in the thread, but thought I'd message you in case you don't see it there. Thanks!

I'll look this over again. It can be confusing.
If no one has popped for it yet, I'd be glad to pay you for the shipping.

I should have contacted you first. It will be in the mail tomorrow. If you ever make it down to Jax, you can buy me a beer.
Hello! I came across a thread about Megaswitches that was sorta dead and wasn't sure if it was better to msg you or bump that thread again... cos I need some help :(

My question is if you knew a way to quiet a Megaswitch schematic. You mentioned to have noticed something in the schematic that may possibly cause noise and I am pretty positive that is what's happening to my guitar. Just wondering if you knew a quick fix or if I should just swap out the switch

    I'm using the Megaswitch P

    Many many thanks!

Let me find that thread again, and I'll get back to you. I believe that's one that Mincer started that has a Megaswitch wiring diagram that leaves a coil or two hanging out on the "hot" side. And it's fine to resurrect an old thread.

Thanks so much! I found the thread so I'll tag you in it so you can share with anyone else that comes across that thread. That is if that switch is capable of a solution. I went for the Megaswitch P for the Inner coils in Parallel with humcanceling (with mag flip) in one of the between positions. I really enjoy it. The inner coils in series is pretty cool too.

I greatly appreciate your help. I feel indebted to you because I imagine figuring these sort of things out is not easy work. Plus in the past, I've come across other nuggets of info / aid from you so thank you.

I never was a great artist plus am a bit rusty but maybe I can draw you up something, if given a subject. I would find it fun.

Sure. No prob man. But I move slowly these days. ;)

I'll take a closer look tomorrow, and get back to you. See ya in the forum.

Hey Artie, just FYI, the Benedetto B6 sounds awesome in my Eastman John Pisano! Just got to actually play it for a while yesterday, very clear and articulate...looks nice, too!

Thanks for the update. I've always been interested in the Benedetto line since seeing the Benedetto "Benny." Cool, but very expensive guitar. At least I can afford the pups in it.
Hey how much for the Duncan Designed 103 chrome set? You have a Reverb store?
    Artie
    Artie
I'd like to get $50, shipped, for the pair. I don't have a Reverb store, but I do have a Reverb account. I also do Paypal. Let meknow what works for you. No rush at all.
    How's the magnet swapping going?

Hey Lew. I'm doing enough customers guitars and equipment, that I haven't had time to mess with my own stuff. I'm going to try to get to it later today, or tomorrow. I'll be sure to report back.
