I think it originated with VH1 in 1978. Other than fuzz pedals no one achieved gain level like that previously. It grew from there with modded Marshalls and Randall Smith juicing up fenders for more gain.
I suppose you could argue it happened with the Thrash guys in the 80s.
The reality is...
I am realizing the title is probably misleading and sending the results in a direction I did not intend. I am looking for a single that will pair well with the rail coil of a P-Rail in the bridge to create a decent position 2 strat sound and sound good on its own in position 3. A true single I...
Probably going to build a pickguard and load up a strat to with PRails. Safer and cheaper option. I don't need another guitar. The Epiphone necks vary a lot. I have been looking for a unique setup for strat #3.
Now I need to decide on a wiring design. Leaning toward something like an hsh but...
Those rotary switches are not terribly flexible. The stock wiring with Duncans will require the magnet of one of the pickups to be reversed. POs 1 and 5 will be full bridge and neck humbucker. 2/3/4 are combinations of coils from each pickup either in series or in parallel
It sounds like most of you think the pickups are capable. I need to do more home work on the P Rail.. The examples of the Phat Cats I have heard so far sound more humbucker than P 90 to me. I just have not heard the bright snarl I would expect from a great P90
