Hey Chris! Hope you're doing well. I have about 5 builds all done except for the last bit of fret leveling and setup. I feel confident about most everything except the last steps to make the guitars truly playable. Here is what I am doing and would love your help. Thank you in advance.
First, I set the neck to dead flat using a notched straightedge. Then I'll go in and level and crown all of the frets. I bolt the neck on, put on strings and then play it through each string to see what it sounds like. Typically it will fret out somewhere along the way. If so, I take the fret rocker and go through the whole board while under string tension and find any high frets. I'll spot-level those and then go play with saddle & nut height to try and get it to something reasonable.
This usually gets the neck to about 75% playability. My challenge is that it's not consistent. Sometimes it will fret out from the 13th fret and up but only when bending which makes me want to add some fallaway. Sometimes it's way up in the 3rd or 4th fret. Or 7th & 9th.
I feel like I am so close but missing some key part of the process. One thing I do not do, which I see most tutorials show, is measuring relief by putting a capo on the 2nd fret and pushing down on the 17th fret or so and then measuring string height at around the 7th fret.
I dunno man. I've learned so much but this part is killing me for some reason. Would appreciate any guidance. Thanks!
