    Incoming NGD x2

Shame about the Fesley; a quartersawn neck, name-brand Wilkinson bridge and name-brand Grover tuners for under $200 seems like a deal. Larry

    Grain sealing

If you don't want to sand back and grain fill, you could spray lacquer until you buid up quite a heavy coat, then see if it will sand flat. It will eventually 'sink' into the pores a bit, but that's the nature of the beast-Gibson's do it as well. Larry

Milling body blanks the wrong way

I would suspect a section of wood cut that way would warp very unpredictably. Larry

Mojotone vs. Philadelphia Luthier Tools magnets

I've made 30-40 pickups with magnets from PLS, and haven't had an issue with inconsistent sizing or finish. I do magnetize all my magnets before use, though, so can's speak to the consistency of their magnetization. Larry

Extra Long 5 Way Blade Switch?

I've got a guitar I'm rewiring, and replaced the import switch with a Fender; problem is the wood where the switch slot is cut is quite a bit thicker than a pickguard, and the switch (even after some aggressive trimming) won't move far enough to reach the last (bridge) position. I'd rather not...

    Thick, Fat Single Coil Set?

I tend to find most single coils too bright, probably because my gear is generally set for HB-equipped guitars. I'm looking for a S/S/S and H/S/S set that leans more toward dark and smoky rather than thin and biting. Only interested in actual single coils, not stacked or single-coil sized HB's...

    Overlooked Guitar Hero

I've always known about 'Polk Salad Annie', but never realized Tony Joe White was SOOOO good. Swampy rhythms and little hooks all over the place, along with a marvelous singing voice. Some great tones, too; he's able to control the bite and attack of that Strat like it's part of his body; I...

Remember when Peavey made drums in the 90s?

I'm actually a drummer. Those were an early attempt to isolate the shell from the mount, allowing the shell to resonate more freely. It's become more common in contemporary drums today: Larry

    Cheap Pickups

You've got $60 to spend on a pair of NEW humbuckers for an LP style guitar; whatcha' buying? Larry

    Probably unanswerable question...

So, with a 24 3/4" scale, ebony FB, mahogany body, 3/4" maple cap and one piece mahogany neck, here's the question: What is the QUINTESSENTAIL Les Paul humbucker set? Not the best, not your favorite, but the one which best captures what a LP 'should' sound like? Larry

Source for long shaft 500K blend pot?

I'm trying to wire a dual HB guitar with V-T/Blend, rather than a three way switch. Problem is I need long-shaft pots, and I'm having a heck of a time finding long shaft 500K blender pots; anyone got a source they could share? Thanks, Larry

    Egnater Tweaker 15 volume fluctuation

I've got an Egnater 15 combo I really enjoy, and it's started having significant volume fluctuations; I'll get it set up at one volume, and it will either increase in volume about two-fold or decrease in volume the same way. Would that indicate new tubes are in order? Bought this used several...

Let's Test Your Pickup Tone Prediction Knowledge!

I thought it might be instructive to see what specs alone could tell us about a pickup's tone. Since I'm winding a bit again, I have the opportunity to list the specs for pickups nobody's ever heard before, and then see how people's predictions match up to (my subjective opinion, admittedly)...

    Winding Humbuckers

I dipped my toes in winding a few years ago, and now after a move and starting to get my shop set back up I've built a better winder and started experimenting again. I can only say that, after a few years off, successfully winding a humbucker makes me think that I might actually have made it as...

    Hotrails Neck Output Question

After getting so much help on whether a Hotrails, with it's brass ferrules molded in, could be direct-mounted, I used the toothpick suggestion I got here and decided to put one in my HSS MIJ Jackson. (The HotRails neck version happened to be one of the 3-4 Duncan pickups my local GC had in...
