    A pickup physics questions

Re: A pickup physics questions The number of windings (as a function of wire gauge) also affects the physical size of the coil. All things being equal, more windings equals a wider coil, which means the coil senses a larger portion of the string. This in turn affects the frequency response...

    Thoughts on volume pots

The conventional wisdom is that 250k volume pots smooth out the highs, whereas 500k (and 1meg) let more of the highs through. Recently, I was swapping pickups in my Flying V, and the Seth was a bit too bright. So I wired in a switch to the volume pot that allowed me to externally switch a...

    Flying V electronics question

Hi folks. I have Gibson v98, which has a modern Flying V form factor, but the controls are laid out like a 58 V. I've replaced the hot pickups with a Seth Lover bridge and neck, and I'd like to get some feedback on some other planned mods. (1) The throw of the toggle switch bothers me, and I'd...

    It's the amp

It's the amp (and speakers) that matters most for EVH: http://www.youtube.com/user/metroampcom#p/u/4/tqLxmsvLE7M Wrong scale. Wrong bridge. Wrong wood. Discuss.

Thoughts on 78 & Seth (long!)

Thoughts on Seth Lovers and EVH/78. Amps were my own hotrodded Ax84 P1-extreme and a Metropoulos Plexi (both power-scaled) through Scumback m25s and Weber Bluedogs. This review is from a Flying V, but keep in the back your mind that I first tried an EVH/78 in a swamp ash Warmoth strat...

    Early Duncan EVH pickup

Believe it or not, evhguitars got me thinking. I seem to remember seeing an advertisement from the late 1970s (Guitar Player?) for a Seymour Duncan Eddie Van Halen pickup. Alas, I can not find that ad (I've search Google images with every combination of keywords I can think of). Does anyone...

    Pickups for a V

This is my new baby, a Gibson Flying V98, which merges 1958 styling with a 1967 body. The previous owner had replaced the 500t bridge pickup with a Seth Lover. After I got home, I changed to a heavier gauge of strings and took out the pickups to see what was really in there. Sure enough, it's...

Talk me out of buying a Flying-V

I'm looking for a guitar to replace my SG. I really dig the sound of mahogany guitars with PAFish bridge pickups, and I'm looking for a guitar that can be used for roots-rock to metal (yep, a pretty broad range, roughly Son Volt to UFO/Sabbath). So, what's wrong with my SG? First, it doesn't...

    Weber Cabs

Does anyone have any experience with Weber extension cabs? https://taweber.powweb.com/store/wccabs.htm (scroll down) I really like their prices ($225 for a 2x12). Can anyone think of a downside to the split-back, which allows open- or closed-back configuration?

    Univalve and Crate Palomino

I know these two amps are at two completely different price points, but does anyone have any experience with the Univalve (or BiValve) or Crate V16 Palomino amps? I'm looking for a tube amp that won't wake up the neighbors, has a good tone, but also has good flexibility (i.e. not a one trick pony).

    50s mod question

When the tone is on 10, is there any audible difference between the 50s mod and the standard tone pot wiring method?

    Theodie's fretwork

I've had this Kramer Pacer Deluxe since 1985, and it's been my main (er, only) guitar until 2 years ago. So, after 20 years of playing, the frets were pretty shot, so I thought I'd let Theodie have a go at giving my old baby a refret. Theodie did a fantastic job, and I highly recomend his...

    Phat Cat neck vs. humbuckers

I'm looking for a neck pickup for my SG. It currently has a Seth neck, and while an improvement over the stock 490r, it's still too dark compared too the 490t bridge (which I like and don't want to switch out). I've already replaced the 300k volume pot with a 500k pot, and althought it helped...

Gasing for a PRS Soapbar at SE

Took my Kramer over to Theodie's yesterday to get a refret, and while I was there, I got to check out a couple of guitars. Saw Brisk's USACG neck -- man, was it beautiful. Theodie had a purple-heart Tele half completed. Cool looking wood, and I'll be interested in how the final product...

    Audio taper

I just wired up a guitar using the schematic below, and the taper of my volume pot seems to be backwards. That is, turning the pot a little ways from 10 causes a dramatic decrease in ouput. To fix this, do I just switch the wires connected to the outer lugs?
