In this case it was definitely the pups though. Once the new Fokin's went in it sounded totally different/way better. The guitar was pretty much perfect otherwise, fretwork was incredible, nut was cut/installed great etc..
When I first got my "Grote" semi-hollow from China ($210 shipped) the pickup's were actually more 'unique-sounding' than my playing :p. So dry/grainy/choppy & honky that they kinda made the axe sound like a trumpet.
While it was kinda cool for a while I swapped them out with a pair of...
And last but not least....

My Indo Ibanez Saber Premium with a Dmz Tone Zone bridge pup, True Velvet single coil in the middle & Air Norton in the neck...it has a slightly darker, warmer/deeper tone than my other S Series axes...

I have'nt had any fretboards really dry out like that. The weather here is hot but humid so...stuff like strings rusting is more what I have to deal with. Gorgomyte puts the richness back in my fretboards & keeps my frets shiny. If it ain't broke....

If you want a sweet shredstick for under $500 (like me :p) nothing beats a Cort imo. The Maroon X700 w/ the white Fishman pups is the only one I paid a bit more for..
