  • hello i was referred to you by another duncan member. im looking to buy my first pair of handwound humbuckers, but money is tight and i was told you have good prices on your pickups. i have a cheap epiphone sg with an alder body and mahogany bolt on neck. im looking for a eric clapton cream tone out of it, im thinking some alnico v pafs. let me know what uthinkand if you have anything on sale. thanks so much for your time!!
David, I used the Ibie for several services last week (special services at the start of a church-wide fast). I LOVE the Zhangbuckers (Duane Plus and Brownbucker PHW) . They're perfect for this guitar, and the guitar is perfect (now) for many of the worship sets we do. Of course the Mojo still comes out for the rockers.
I did a bit of reading about Levi after you mentioned him. Frankl was a psychiatrist and was also a camp survivor. He founded logotherapy, which holds that the search for meaning in life is the most powerful motivating force for humans -- even more than pleasure or power, which lead only to nihilism.

Dennis Prager often cites Frankl on his radio show and has a quote of his own that to my mind goes hand in hand with the Frankl quote and which I have often put in my signature:

"Only if there is a God who created man is man worth anything beyond the chemicals of which he is composed."
Mr Zhang, you mentioned Victor Frankl in your signature. Primo Levi was also an author of books which describe the darkest moments of mankind's history. Unfortunately his words as well as Mr Frankl's are true. Yours Van B.
I really couldn't get much formvar on a bucker-90. We're talking low 7's at best. Probably way too thin for you, formvar or not.
i mean, it would be a good balance, since formvar is a bit darker but having a slightly lower count wind/less resistance(because of the h-sized bobbin) usually ends up being a bit brighter and clearer. hypothetically, anyways:)
so essentially, would the pickup turn out with less output and more brightness, but with a darker chewier sounding wire?
It might work, I haven't made one that way. The amount of wire I could get on one would be pretty limited though.
hey zhang, i was just reading the formvar vs. enamel thread and read the last statement, basically saying formvar is darker and chewier in a strat pickup. do you think that would be a good sound for a set of h-sized p-90s? the reason i ask is because sometime in the future(maybe in the next few months?) i might want a set of p-90s for my SG and i thought of you:)
    Hey Zhang,

There's an old thread on here: "Is the Jerry Donahue wiring scheme truly a mystery to the public?". The same thing grabbed my attention as did yours - how cool it would be to get this:

"Position 4: By combining both pickups with a capacitor and resistor in a controlled degree of reversed phase, the guitar offers a bell-like, rich tone that echoes the classic Strat® sound. Until now, this sound could only be obtained by the use of the bridge and middle pickups on a typical Strat."

    ...in an LP. You posted:

This position 4 thing below is what interests me -- can anybody boil the diagram down to the two pickups, the cap and the resistor in this "controlled degree of reversed phase"? It would be the coolest thing to be able to dial up a fairly decent "cluck" tone on an LP without having to put in a middle pickup.

...did you ever get a satisfactory answer to your question, or have you discovered a solution/located a wiring diagram?

    Thanks for your time,
    Ben
Just noticed your location and decided to pipe in too!
I'm in Hollywood actually (near Thai Town).
    That said, HI!
    What up, Zhang?
NoHo, huh? Me too, pretty much. Since you're so close, I wanna hear one of your Henry VIII's one of these days! :D
    Hi Zhang,
I also heard about you from another member. I just bought a little Squire VM Tele Thinline. The Seymore Duncan Designed pup in the bridge is too bright for me. I'm more of an overdriven, blues/rock style player. I may be interested in you Paul Bunyan pup, but not sure how to buy.

    Thanks
    Garth
    Hello Zhang,
I've heard nothing but good things about your Paul Bunyan pickup set for the Tele. I'm currently in the market for some nice replacements for my MIA jobber. Basically I'm looking for more of a Keith Richards, or Wallflowers, Mike Campbell tone from my axe. I guess more bluesy than country. My git has an alder body, and a rosewood fingerboard if this helps. What can I expect tone, look and price wise from a set of your pickups?
I'm actually very interested in purchasing from a local custom builder so please let me know if you're interested.
    Thanks,
    Louis
