A guitar pickup works without magnets - I have a headache

Okay since we're on what seems to be a interesting but irrelevant topic.. does this mean you could put magnet-less pickups in the normal positions and put humongous magnets behind the nut to magnetize the strings? Or would that put the magnetism too far away from the pups to work?

    Multi-wind pickups

Okay now I get it.. I've never been able to get inductance to work with my plumbing metaphor for electronics :-) Thanks as always!

    Multi-wind pickups

Yeah I think we talked about the capacitance in that other thread many years ago! Interesting from your video was the lack of inductance. I wouldn't have expected that.

    Multi-wind pickups

I mainly did the sand down the wire and solder the tap off of it approach.. and they failed quite a bit. The more successful ones went to eyelets as you mentioned.. But they were all one off for specific designs so I just kept going on each one until that particular pup was done. But...

    Multi-wind pickups

Yep, I was thinking more like the video that freefrog shared, but looking for results more like the multiwind product. My initial thought was why don't I wind two wires at the same time and just stop winding one of them at whatever length I want and then connect the input to the output on a...

    Multi-wind pickups

A good while back, when I was still winding pickups, I posted a thread wondering if anyone had wound multiple coils simultaneously.. Theoretically there seem to be so many options with easy multitap seeming the most obvious.. However, no one thought it would work and I didn't pursue it any...

Let's play a " What If " game with Guitar Models

Easy.. Parker night fly.. hss.. literally can make every strat or Les Paul sound you can imagine but it's got steel frets, a rock solid carbon neck, one of the best trems ever designed and all kinds of mods that make it a perfect do everything stage guitar...

    Parlor Guitars?

Sorry, missed this... For what I was looking for (intament, full range tone, low tension) the 12 fret won.. It has required some position shifts that would fall higher on the neck with a 14, but worth the adjustment.

    Fretting question

Sure if I'm playing something that's relatively static.. back and forth... More likely I'll be doing something scalar so using scale fingerings is more common for me.

    NAD - Peavey Classic 50 2x12

You found the magic.. My 50 4 * 10 is my primary tube stage app. Unbelievably versatile... from totally clean to hard Rock. Great effects loop incredibly sturdy, just an overall great amp. Wish I could help you with the foot switch, but let us know how things go and when and where you're...

I'm beginning to think that autopilot gets better as we age

Good point.. I know that you're correct about subconscious learning. I had a period where I had to lay down the guitar for about a year and dreaded relearning.. But when I came back, it took about a day to catch up and within a week I was doing things well beyond what I could do before...

The pros & cons of alder?

I think others have mentioned, although alder is very balanced and gorgeous tone, it's not terribly pretty and needs to be painted, so it costs less.. My best strat is alder. And it's some have already mentioned, there are plenty of rules to be broken. My Parker nightfly is maple, it's a wee...

I'm beginning to think that autopilot gets better as we age

Toward the end of the gig last night, a guy in the audience brought me an Epi hollow body because they wanted to see it on stage.. It was pretty and I enjoy interacting with the audience, so I tuned it up, while the band decided to shift over to bossa Nova so that we could screw around with...

    Something about the JB...

It's funny, when the JB works I don't think there's anything better for what it does.. and when it doesn't work it's a real pain, so I give customers a word of warning along with preparation of a quick return if necessary :-) We've been through this before, it seems to be very correlated to the...

How to choose a 5 string bass for a better B string sound?

Mincer nailed it.. it's the long scale... My sixth string looks like I'm holding a table in front of me it's so long and wide..
