.012 strings on Strat

Re: .012 strings on Strat

I agree, the 12's would be super hard to bend on a strat. But if ALL you're doing is slide, you're good. And also I feel that heavy strings don't necessarily mean better tone, Billy Gibbons and BB king (to my knowledge) use light strings. But with slide I can see the heavier strings sustaining more.

Billy G uses 8s but I'm pretty sure BB uses a set around 11-50 or so.

Re: .012 strings on Strat

i heard bb uses skinny strings to. something to the effect of "why work harder than you have to"

obviously not back in the day since they werent available

Re: .012 strings on Strat

Lately, I've ordered single strings to create my own custom mix. It started out just as a stop-gap when I'd break a string and ended up with a bunch of broken sets. Keep in mind that when changing string size that the nut, saddles and intonation should be checked.

Re: .012 strings on Strat

i remember doing that; you'll want 4 or 5 springs if you don't already, and consider dropping the bridge against the body if you don't already

sounds huge

Re: .012 strings on Strat

i remember using pure nickel 12's for a while. They really sound fat. I can bend em about as far as i can throw dick cheney. So not very far!

Re: .012 strings on Strat

i like to use 11 to 49 or 12 to 52. Strats up until 1965 came with 13 to 56 as standard. 10s weren't intro'd till the mid 60s as OEM when Fender came up with "the rock gauge". I'm thinking to put on a set of 13 to 56 to see what tones come out myself, 12 to 52 should not be a problem. Bonus: Wound G's sound MUCH better than plain G's.

Re: .012 strings on Strat

maybe irrelevant to the original post, but i upgraded from an elixir set of 10-52's to an ernie ball set, 12/16/24/32/44/56 and the tone felt huge. so much more body to it. it kills my hand everytime i play, but i'm so happy with them.
