1/4 Pound tele set

Folks-

I just installed a set of Quarter pounders in my tele, here's a report.

First off mine is a Lite Ash Tele by Fender. Made in Korea, she came equiped with Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro single coils.

These were nice enough for traditional tele tones, but I needed more midrange and output for my tastes. I play in an original Souther Rock group and go for an early 70's Marshall/Bassman Rock tone. So the Alnico Pros were too thin. I would roll the tone half way down and play mostly on the lead pup.

Well after posting a few questions to a couple of forums I desided to try out Duncan's Quarter Pound tele set. To be honest the sound files at Duncan's site had a lot to do with it. They sounded just like what I was looking for.

And they were.

I tried them out yesterday at rehersal and they were great! Nice and full, with a well balanced midrange. Not overly honky at all. And not too hot either. I only had to turn the gain on my Rat pedal down a tad from the setting I used with the Alnico Pros.

Insted of rolling my tone half way down, I just turned it down a to maybe 1/4. And rolled it up all the way to really cut threw.

The best part was that the neck posision sounded great for a change! This was just what I was looking for. When I listened to the recording we made of this rehersal I heard the woody churp I had been missing before. Cool!

So I am very happy with the Duncan Quarter Pounders. And the tone of my tele is whare I need it to be. It's full and strong, with all the cut I was looking for. A real rock'en tele tone! And that's what I was going for.

Re: 1/4 Pound tele set

Welcome to the club. My Peavey Genny is a Tele-clone. It has a set of tapped QP's that make it one of my favorite axe's. ;)

Re: 1/4 Pound tele set

i was at the shop the other day and this guy brought in his tele and said he hadnt played it in a while cause it sounded thin and lifeless. so i pop the case open and it has a set of qp's. i give the guy a questioning look but say nothing and plug it into an old deluxe hit a few notes and everybody in the shop turns around smiling.
so i say "ya sure ya want to change those out?" great tones. i have them in my tele

I've got QP's in my tele too, great pups, however I'm thinking of going back to something more vintage in the neck, are you interested in maybe unloading those A2P's?

I sure am. What's the going rate these days for a used set?

So, does the qp tapped get a pretty vintage tone? Or is it still pretty gutsy with those big ol' magnets?

It's much more vintage, but you still have a bit different tone from the larger mags.

Is the lead pup still pretty twangy and bright? I'm thinking of putting a tapped lead in my ash tele. Thanks!

Re: 1/4 Pound tele set

My personal QP is a non-tapped version, so I can't comment with a lot of authority, just about everyone elses is a tapped version though.

FWIW Mine still gets some twang with the tone turned up.

I think you'll like the STL-2 a bit better when tapped than the QP. The Hot sounds a bit more traditional when tapped than does the QP (at least through my rig).

Re: 1/4 Pound tele set

Oh, yeah, duh! Thanks! I hadn't even looked at the hot tapped...
