#1 About to get a facelift.

I got to thinking the other day that I don't use the controls nearly as much as I do on all my other guitars. Currently it has a audio master volume control and a .022uf master tone control.

So I decided to go online and order a linear volume control with a kill switch built into it and a TBX tone control. I also ordered a smaller .018uf tone cap (this makes the tone control more useful in the lower range of its travel) and a .0022uf cap for the bass cut.

The parts should come in around June 6, mostly because their aren't any massive suppliers of .018uf caps. But I'll alert you of the results when the parts come in.

Just as a side possibility, I was wondering if any of you fellas have found worthwhile results of using an inductor ro notch the midrange of your pickups. The humbuckers on my Strat are A2 and as such they could possibly use a bit more scoop when split. I currently have a resistor wired in there to maintain a bit more bass, so maybe an inductor can give me a *perfect* split tone.

Re: #1 About to get a facelift.

I have found that thinkin' often gets me in trouble...and TBX tone controls do more damage than good...and there is no perfect split HB...split HB just doesn't sound good to me except maybe sometimes on Strat switch position 2....

This TBX isn't wired stock. In other news, Fender fixed the literature for the TBX on their website. They no longer say it cuts bass or adds highs, they now say that it works as a standard tone control from 0 to 5 and "decreases resistance" from 5 to 10.

As far as split tones go, I've found hot A5 pickups with a resistor in series to ground will get you 95% of the way there. I'm looking at the mid notch from the inductors ro get rid of the heavy mids A2s are known for.

How is the TBX wired???like the concept but never like the results...

Re: #1 About to get a facelift.

I know Vinnie has done stuff with mid cuts (his Firebird is the #2 result on YouTube for the subject), but does anyone know any good starting values for the inductor for an always on mid cut for the cool splits?

I've also been using 22nf with my hbs and it's a tad too dark. Just scored some 18nf and 15nf PIOs.

Re: #1 About to get a facelift.

So I found out that the Killpot pops a bit, but the problem is I have so much going in my cavity at the moment that I can't put a resistor in to silence the popping. It's not too bad a pop, so I'll have to check to see if it's noticable when playing live and then see what I'll do about it later on if it's an issue.

Nice, I meant I just put mine in and I'm loving it. 18nf seems to be the cutoff before it gets honky at 15nf. So light, creamy, and silky smooth.

Re: #1 About to get a facelift.

I actually started to buy them when my ES-175, which I use for my main Jazz guitar, had a cap on the neck that measured crazy low at 19nF. It was darn near perfect, so I bought a bunch of 18nFs in bulk in an attempt to find ones that can recreate that magic. It's darn near impossible to get a good tone out of anything 22nF or higher anywhere below 5 or so on the pot.
