Forgive my ignorance but is there 1 or 2 magnets under the humbucker bobins?

Generally it is actually 1 or 3 magnets. If there is one, it lies between the two coils. If there are three, the additional magnets flank the pickup, and sit to the outside of the coils, opposing the magnetic polarity of the center magnet.

Or even twelve. The HN series from Anderson use tiny but strong wafer thin neodymium magnets.
