1 pup or 2??

why do some artists such as Alexi Laiho form children of bodom play only wiht a bridge pickup and have no neck pickup on their guitars??

Re: 1 pup or 2??

if they only play on the bridge pup then there is no reason to have another pup's magnatism pulling on the strings or other controls cluttering up the body. not the most versitle setup but i think many metal guys could get away with it, and im sure those guys have other guitars if they wanna have a variety of tones

Re: 1 pup or 2??

like i said previously.... no neck pup and no tone pot is a waste of guitar

Not necesarily. ;)

If you only play with mega gain and have some kind of programmable EQ for sonic shaping, you could very well get away with it.

That being said, I use both pickups extensively and often blend them with each other, so, I could not live without a neck pickup. :burnout:

Re: 1 pup or 2??

the bridge pup has a brighter sound which cuts through much better than the warmer sound of the neck pup. if you are playing fast, you need to sound crisp, not muddy. THAT's why metal guys predominantly use the bridge pup.

Re: 1 pup or 2??

with all the stuff these days, you're pretty much unable to set stuff up properly if you cant get a good tone out of the neck pup.. people are just lazy, thats all

I rarely use my neck pup and I think I could do fine with a single pup. I don't like the tone that is the neck pup under gain. It has nothing to do with laziness. I only like neck tones clean.

I have actually been thinking of starting another project guitar with a single bridge humbucker...but possibly with a splitting switch. For rythym a single and lead full bucker. I will, however have a tone knob though Davey so worry not! :)

Or if your name is Eddie Van Halen (for the 70's and some of the 80's) :D

Seriously though, I don't have a whole lot of use for a neck pickup. I'm able to get a good rhythm or lead tone from a bridge 'bucker and a volume knob.

Do any of you neck pickup enthusiasts ever pick up an acoustic and say "This thing sucks because there's no switch to make it bassier" ? :)

You dont have to do anything really... I had a guitar that I was trying exactly what Jeremy said I wanted maximum sustain so i took out the neck humbucker and for awhile i just played it like it was... Then I got sick of the the snake skin finish it had on it so I decided to paint it and I thought that filling the hole might give the body back more mass and help the tone a little... So I routed the pickup cavity as close to a perfect rectangle as i could and I fashioned a mahogony plug for the hole used automotive bondo to fill in the cracks and repainted it... I dont think it changed the tone much... but I was glad to get rid of that snake skin paint job...

If the reason for removing the neck pickups it is your concern about the string pull due the magnetic field then the easiest solution it is to lower the neck pickup about 0.5'-0.4'. At that distance the effect of the magnet on the strings will be weak enought. Anyway the I don't think the magnetic field of a single humbucker it is strong enough to be worry about it.

If you are planing to remove the neck pick for cosmetics then I just will think in a way to cover the hole. If you guitar it is a strat like then build a custom pickguard without the neck hole. If your guitar it is a LesPaul type then build a rectangle with the same dimensions of the mounting ring. Refilling the hole won't do any effect on the tone so i wouldn't worry about that.

Personally, I'd just leave it empty. That's just my personality however.

Nope, I just pick closer to the neck. ;)

Re: 1 pup or 2??

1 pup or 2?? Can I pick 3? Strats Rule!

Anyway, my few on this is that 1 pick-up is perfectly fine, as long as you have tone knobs and possibly a switch for coil tapping...

Otherwise I would have to choose 2 or 3 pups.
I wouldn't like to use pick-ups without a tone knob...

Re: 1 pup or 2??

allthough, i almost never seem to find an excuse to use the middle pup on a strat =P
