10-46 using drop D

Hi,

Iv always used regular gauge of 10-46 strings with standard E tuning. Resently did drop D on tje low E.

With the low E (according to daddario calculator) tuned to standard E will have 17.5kg of tension.
Drop D on 46 is about 14kg. Thats about 1.5kg difference.

Will the tension missmatch cause the neck to warp if i were to leave it that way for months?

Agreed with the 10-52s for drop D and no it wont mess up the neck

Re: 10-46 using drop D

But if using ernie balls 10-52 and drop the low E, wouldnt that still be miss matched tension?

Atleast i know now that it doesnt hurt the neck.

The neck is not made of cheese, but wood. Something that has evolved to take strain of waymore than the string tension.

There are plenty of cases of guitars with all sorts of tunings and string tensions, they survive.

Stop overthinking things.

You will be fine, I bounce between half step down and drop D half step down and never had an issue with the neck. Dont overthink it. Tune it to drop D, play your arse off and enjoy.

If you’re concerned about the tension being off, get a 10-46 balanced tension set, and swap a 52 for the 46.

Thanks guys.

Its one of the best guitars i have and i might have overthought about it.

Im safe with this then. I want this guitar to be drop D while the others stay standard tuning.

Re: 10-46 using drop D

Your neck is adjustable to counteract the string tension.

I use 9-46 and often play in drop D.

Unrelated but kind of funny, over on sevenstring.org, people talk about drop D, but it’s on 8 string guitars, so an octave lower.

Yeah, but loosen your truss rod all the way, and even light gauge strings will warp it into an upbow making it hard to play.

That’s why we have truss rods.

Stop overthinking things.

Yep!

Depends on the neck and guitar. Most of my builds with 11's or 12's at standard tuning don't move in the slightest

Re: 10-46 using drop D

Your guitar should be just fine. The question is, do you want that floppy downtuned feel? I didn’t like it when I tuned down and switched to 11s. I play a Gibson scale guitar.

I put double action rods and two carbon bars in my necks. They only move where you set them.

But try it on a Fender or Gibson. I set up guitars that are brought to be with misadjusted rods all the time. Either the action is too high or it’s buzzing in the middle. [emoji1]

The feeling is fine. It doesnt flop too easily. But i think i have a hard time hearing the low E in drop D.
I think ill switch the low E for a 52. Hopefully itll have more volume.

Re: 10-46 using drop D

I use 10-46 religiously, in drop-d on a 25.5 inch scale length and never had any issues. You're good. Don't over think it.
