10" Replacement speaker for Vox Practice amp

Currently looking at three to replace the busget Vox Vx-10 stock speaker.;

1) Weber Blue Pup
2) Weber Silver Ten
3) Celestion G10 Greenback

Anyone chime in, have any input or feedback?

Jeff Beck uses a stock reissue Jensen P10R in his Fender Blues Juniors.

Hi Lew, I'm going for an authentic British vibe for the Vox. I put old stock tubes in it and it really cooks.

I've heard there are quite a few people who don't like it, but I've found the Celestion G10N-40 works really well in a small enclosure.

thats the kind of thing I want to avoid. The clips of the Weber Blue Pup, even though it has some sweet chime, does seem to have this weird Fizz on top of the compression. Makes me wonder if I wouldnt be better off with the Celestion G10 Greenback.
I have Jensen ALnico 10's out the wazoo, but I wanna go traditional British sound.

Is there a hemp-coned 10in? Tonetubby, Eminence...

I played the Humboldt Hot Rod and it was really mid-y. Reminded me of a Vox with ugly gain, actually. I think if the whatever pothead-named speaker that's in the Humboldt was in a Vox, it'd sound really amazing.

Those are P10Q's...I mentioned a P10R. Very different speakers.

And that guy in the video's no Jeff Beck.

Probably some kind of Celestion is in order anyways...although the "authentic British vibe" MM seems to be after comes from 12's...not 10's.

yeah, I forgot the Tone Tubby. They make a 10" hemp cone thats in the same price category. Plus if I didnt like it I could always crumble it up and smoke it.

I love the little Greenback. It sounds full and doesn't feel stiff even at very low volumes. Can't help you about the Webers, haven't heard them. The P10R was a disaster.

Yeah, although for a 4 watt amp, I'm leaning towards a 20 watt speaker, and Greenback is 30 watts, and not very efficient. I guess this is one of those deals where you just gotta pick your poison.

I recently set up a 2 x 10 cab with Celestion 10" Greenbacks. They are inefficient but they sound great, very full. If you want good Brit tone, the GBs would be great, but they will probably make the amp sound a little less powerful ... which can be a good thing, it would allow you to turn the amp up more.

I have a Laney VC15 that came with a Jensen, which sounded loud and harsh. I replaced that with an old Celestion G10-50 and lost a little volume but gained a far better tone.

Of course you could go old school and fit a Celestion G10-Gold, the Alnico 10". I also have a pair of them in a 2 x 10 cab, and they are noticeably more efficient that the Greenbacks. Noticeably more expensive, too, but worth it. The Greenies sound great out of the box, the Alnicos sound good but i suspect need some break-in time to really give up the good stuff.

Don't worry about the numbers, Jerry. The little greenie loves low wattage amps. I've tested it with two 5 watters and a 1w.

Just thinking about it ... I've spent a lot of hours with my 15 watt Laney running the pair of 10" Greenbacks at very low volume ... with the amp delivering maybe four to six watts to the speakers. The sound has always been wonderful.

Indeed the Greenbacks are less efficient and might turn your four-watt amp into a three-watt amp. But ... who cares ? At those levels it doesn't really make any difference ... if you want more than five watts, use a bigger amp. Besides, any percieved loss of output is more than compensated for by the greatly-improved sound. The bigger low-end response is a great help in making small amps sound like their bigger brothers.

As a point of interest, the original Vox AC4 had an EL84 power tube but the preamp was an EF86, which is a pentode, not a dual triode like the 12AX7. It provides a fat, darker tone, with just a volume and tone control (they also had tremolo).

Celestian makes a 10" Greenback that is supposed to be nice, as well as an Alnico Blue. Both are recommended replacements for the Vox AC4TV. Might work for you. Be forewarned, the Blue is expensive.

The Celestion 12" range features both an Alnico Blue model (15 watts RMS) and an Alnico Gold (50 watts RMS).

The only Alnico model in the 10" range is the Alnico Gold, rated at 40 watts RMS. There is no Alnico Blue in the 10" range.
