10" v. 12" speaker -- what's the tonal difference?

Re: 10" v. 12" speaker -- what's the tonal difference?

If you're looking for those old JBL 10's (or EV's for that matter) get the Weber clones and be done with it...they are VERY close to the originals and have options that can tame the brightness (different dust caps) as well as magnet options. The Weber 10's I have tried have actually blown me away everytime so far...in fact all of Ted's speakers have blown me away!

You got a link? I'm interested!

i dunno -- the concept of the 2x10 cabinet sounds cool - plus if you use two tens in a deluxe instead of 1x12, you're going to get more volume -- weber makes a bunch of 10" speakers, and eminence makes some as well:smokin:

2x10's will walk all over 1x12 99 times out of 100!

I am also a big fan of mixing one ceramic and one alnico...you get a nice solid bottom and punch from the ceramic and if you use the right alnico you get amazing break up from it...

Ted Weber's 10's are killer...I have not tried too many of the Eminence and likely won't not to say that they re no good but I have been really happy with Ted's speakers so far...

What brand of 10s are you using? I know there's not a lot of them out there?

No clue - it was in an old Marshall 4x10 a buddy of mine had. Model 1965, IIRC. I'm using, no doubt, much higher gain than you're going to be, though.

Sweet ... that's just about perfect! If I go with the project ... I bet I'll be visiting that site. Thanks! :)

Those 1965 cabs are loaded with G10-35L speakers...they are cool speakers for slightly gritty cleans or a vintage style OD type tone but they weren't really made for high gain. Celestion also has another 10 they call the Vintage 10 I belive which is a 10 inch version of the Vintage 30 and it can be nice for higher gain sounds but for guys that use high gain or higher 10's usally don't do it for them anyway...then just don't move enough bass to get that super thick saturated metal tone.

Well you made my day twice ... I got to go nuts on post #14 and you gave me site to answer my 10" project needs. You are da man!

I really can't say enough nice things about dealing with Ted...I have bought several speakers form him, and they have all been killer. Also, if you need help with a specific project justr drop him an email...you'll get an answer back real quick and Ted is a real helpful guy!

I'm another big fan of 10s. You just don't get the mud that you get with 12s.

I've had experience with a few of the modern 10" speakers. The Jensen reissue alnicos are pretty nice, def better than the Eminence Legend alnicos, if that's the tone your after, but like most alnicos they can be kind of thin a lower volumes. For ceramic I really like the Eminence Ramrod, it has a celestion V30 flavor, but without the mud of a 12". I am getting an Eminence Little Buddy, its supposed to be similar to the Tone Tubbies, with a hemp cone, it'll likely be a little dark, but very smooth. I'll let y'all know when I try it out. btw I really like 10's for most of the same reasons as mentioned earlier.

You'll have to let me know what you think about thet Lil Buddy!

I have tried the Eminence Can Rex and I dug it...the Lil Buddy is the 10 inch version of it and I hear good things about it
