12 Inch Speaker Like The Vintage 30 But Without The Annoying Hi Spike??

I have been doing some speaker mixing and I just tried 2 black shadows both with 2 v30s and then with 2 g12k100 celestions. I definately like the black shadows un offending mids and highs but think it sounds a little sterile compared to the v30. I am going to keep the g12k100 speakers as they have a very nice low and are clean with the v30s they mix well. I will probably keep the v30- g12k1oo combination with the v30s on top. I am however curious as to whether there is a speaker like the vintage 30 but without its annoying properties?? Maybe the Emminence v12? or other speaker out there that I have not heard of? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I would possibly be willing to trade 2 black shadows for 2 of the speakers that fit this description. Thanks

I have two Eminence v12s on the bottom of my avatar 4x12. They're paired with two Celestion 70/80s on top and there's a good reason for it. The 70/80s have a lot of highs and the v12s are VERY bassy. I can't really say the v12s retain too much characteristic of their counterpart, the vintage 30, but they definately sound good. They're very smooth, but maybe not exactly what you're looking for. I'm not quite sure, however. Good luck with your search!

Peace.

I need a higher wattage speaker to blend with the g12k100. The g12h is a low wattage speaker. 30 watts?
I think the emminence legend in the Krank cabs sound ok. Any thoughts on those speakers?

explain further what's annoying about the vintage 30. I like them, but haven't tried many other really aside from factory amp speakers.

Well they have a strange hollow sound, and the midrange is not all that nice.
Too much bass, works ok in an openback combo, but it gets kind of undefined.
Plus they always seems to have their own voice no matter what amp I use with them.

What about the G12h??
They are way nicer than that annoying V30, dislike that hard hollow sound the V30 has.

Thats what I was thinking..........

Yeah 4 of those in a nice cab...ah nice:)
Just like old Greenback 30 watts, could easily handle a big mean Plexi 100 watts top.

Yes. I used Vintage 30's for years then tried the G12H-30 RI and that's been my favorite ceramic mag Celestion ever since. Lew

I still really like the Vintage 30 though. It seems to me to be a little louder, more efficient, and clearer than the G12H-30 in a Fender Deluxe Reverb.

I prefer the tone of the G12H-30...but I still like the V-30 alot too.

In a blackface Deluxe Reverb amp, I think the G12H-30 is my all time favorite speaker and the V-30 would be #2.

In a 4 x 12 Marshall bottem the V-30 sounds very differant than it does in an open back combo amp: much fuller, deeper and sweeter.

And in a two 12 open back combo amp, the V-30 and G12H-30 compliment each other beautifully and the sum of the two speakers makes for a great tone that many prefer to the tone of two G12H-30's or two V-30's.

Splawn turned me onto the eminence Redcoat series. I think they are voiced a little better than the 30's. Check out the Redcoat G12T75 if you want a higher wattage one.

The high end sizzle and hollownwess I could do without. The EQ seems to work with my g12k100 speakers. It is confusing. I have to turn my Presence almost off ond my highs on about 4 to ghet it toned down. With the Black shadows I was trying it went away but those speakers are too neutral and clean for the mix with the g12k1oo speakers that I am keeping.

I use a 2 channel Dual rectifier. and a Mesa oversized cab. Thanks

Re: 12 Inch Speaker Like The Vintage 30 But Without The Annoying Hi Spike??

I remember hating the mids and high end sizzle on the vintage 30's when I first got them. The thing is, once you crank an amp hard enough to overdrive the power tubes AND overdrive the speakers so that the speakers naturally distort, the fizzle goes away and it's nice and smooth. The midrange in the Vintage 30's helps your tone cut in a live band mix. The key to the old celestion greenbacks was that they distorted easily. It takes a lot more volume to distort the vintage 30's since they were made with modern, high gain amps in mind.

Now I love my vintage 30's with my 1977 Marshall Super Lead Mark II. Right now I have both vintage 30's and g12T75's in my cab. I would like to save up for a straight cab loaded with greenbacks.

Another vote for the Eminence V12s!

Eminence Governor. A lot like the V-30 without the annoying spike.

Re: 12 Inch Speaker Like The Vintage 30 But Without The Annoying Hi Spike??

As Lew stated, the V30/G12H30 pairing is pretty swanky :).

+1. Vintage 30's are neither hollow nor really fizzy. At really low volumes they don't sound their best but a lot of speakers don't. You gotta get the speakers pushing some air. Once you crank em a little they are very full tone wise. They sound a little like the G12H30 but without their low bottom and the Greenbacks but without quite as much mid warmth. Overall great speakers esp in closed back cabs.
