im terribly spoiled since my dad's had a '68 guild jumbo 12 string since before i was born. sounds amazing

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I have a played them in store often
But today they just sounded like a chorus playing with me

Simply amazing

The Taylor had electronics
Which , to me, puts it slightly ahead of the Eastmans

All of them came with Hardshell Case

Nothing beats a real 12 string. Everyone should have one.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I have four 12-strings. My two electrics are DanElectro Innuendos. They feature built-in distortion (unusable), chorus, delay and tremolo; the effects are about as good as their FAB effects boxes. One in blueburst and the other cherry sunburst. A Gotoh bridge and mini Grover tuners and a graphite nut, but the three pickups are pretty basic. Pretty well balanced. Great value for the money.

The two acoustics are a pair of Takamine EF-381SC dreadnaughts. I REALLY LOVE these guitars! CTB-4 preamp is terrific, and they have a big sound, even unamplified. Again, mini-Grovers, so they stay in tune. I use same strings as factory, D'Addario EXP PB Lights. Both needed a bit of nut filing, but that's normal for most 12-strings. I wanted a Taylor Jumbo, but frankly...these do everything I ask for about 1/4 the price. Winner!

I also had a Daisy Rock 12-string that was nice and sounded good, but I preferred the Innuendos.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I have a Variax Acoustic with a mighty fine 12 string sound. I don't own an actual 12 string. But I love the sound of them. I can't play them very well, though.

I have an Ovation 12-string acoustic and a BC Rich 10-string electric (same concept, but the low E and A strings aren't doubled). Both are wonderful instruments that I love to play.

I think the biggest mistake people make with them is to assume that you play them just like a six-string. The reality is that it's similar, but just as different of a tool as electric vs. acoustic. They're simply AWESOME for some things, but kind of suck for others. The key is having the ability to recognize the right tool for the job.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I've only had Epiphone 12 strings, one acoustic, and two of the double-necks, all of which seemed a bit too cost-cut compared to other more expensive ones I've played in stores. I sold the last 12 string I had at Xmas to fund a winding machine, but did get the chance to compare it to the Gibson CS one - major difference in weight and feel.

I've not been tempted to buy another acoustic, but currently have a luthier friend putting together a Gibson copy... That's taking FOREVER, grr!

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I was looking at tuning
and it seems the drones on the low three are an octave up
and the high three are just doubled

does that sound right.?

Nope. Bottom 4 are octaves, top two are doubled. There's also variations of whether the low comes first or the octave comes first. Both sound different when you play.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

12 strings are the only acoustics I've ever really wanted to learn. I had an old Levin once, but unfortunately somebody knocked it over and the neck snapped. I have toyed with the idea of replacing it, but never gotten around to it.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I donr follow

On most 12-strings, starting with E-6 and going down to G-3, you will have the bass string, then the octave.

Rickenbackers (and some other brands) have it so the OCTAVE string comes first. A luthier must make a new nut if you want to reverse your guitar.

FYI...the pair of strings is called a "course"; a mandolin has four courses of strings, a 12-string has six courses.

Re: 12 string guitars are awesome

I think that is what makes the Rick sound so distinctive. I've played Rick 12 strings, but there is almost no space between courses. No wonder McGuinn used banjo picks. This is my fav electric 12 string song, although it is heavily influenced by the Byrds. It was played on a Rick, but nowadays, Steve Howe does it with a Steinberger 12 string, which has a really elegant tuning system.
