12 string neck relief issue

Re: 12 string neck relief issue

*waggles hand* That can depend on the shop you take it to. Ask around, check a few places. Proceed with caution - make sure the tech has done a few, and particularly that he's done a few 12 strings.

I know a guy who has restored many guitars, including the old Gibson 12 string acoustic I mentioned earlier. That thing was unplayable before he got to it. He's also very reasonable on pricing. I just need to convince him to do it for free. Lol

Any extra parts laying around (guitar parts, not body parts)?

Goats? Got any goats?

Anyway, I ran a straight edge across the top of the frets and the corner of it met with the bridge about 1/32" below the top edge. I'm guessing that's not enough to warrant a reset.

Yeah, that sounds pretty good...

Sounds like working the saddle is your best bet.

Next time you change your strings, try and pull the saddle out, see if the pickup comes with. Good luck!

I will... carefully. Lol. Just got a sweet deal on 3 sets of D'Addarios to try out on it. Figured I'd need at least a spare set because you know how strings tend to need replacing when making some types of adjustments.

*shrug* Just be careful winding them to the post, and don't cut 'em 'til you're finished... or let a tech take a whack (of course, where's the fun in that? ;) ).

Haha! Yeah, I may have someone coming into town this weekend that wants to take a look at it. He's a pretty skilled repairman, so maybe he can at least give me some pointers as to what I can do with it.

Re: 12 string neck relief issue

So... since I'm still waiting on my new strings to come in, I went ahead and took off the old ones. 2 of them had broken at the tuning posts anyway, so it was temporarily a 10-string. Lol. With the strings off, I decided to see about these saddles. It turns out that they actually aren't bonded to the transducers after all! They are just held against the pickups by these little... rails? I don't know what else to call them. Anyhow, they came out really easily. I didn't even need pliers. So now, I need to be really careful regarding sanding these down because I'm not sure how many other saddles are shaped the way these are on the bottoms. There are grooves in them at intervals where the strings go across, if that makes sense. I think these pickups actually have individual sensors for each string course from what it looks like inside. With all that said, this makes me wonder if it's ok to sand the bottoms down at all.

Re: 12 string neck relief issue

Wow, I'm so relieved to find this info on another forum. I didn't realize I shouldn't file the bottom of these particular saddles. I'm so glad I didn't. I did notice some shims under the pickup that I may be able to remove. Looks like they're made of phenolic or something like that.
