12 string pickups?

Re: 12 string pickups?

I would think the Jazz or the '59 set would be my choice for a humbucker in a 12-string, though my real preference is for single coils.

In the thread about signature guitars, I just posted my idea for my signature guitar a G&L Comanche XII 12-string. I think Leo Fender's Z-coils would be perfect for a 12-string model.

Re: 12 string pickups?

I'm with Bill, I would want something as much like a single coil as possible. I would include the Screamin Demon to his list as well.

Re: 12 string pickups?

The best electric 12, going by sound is the Rickenbacker 360/12. But that's just by how it sounds. The string spacing is so tight that it is only playable by people with MUCH smaller hands than mine.

So the best p'up for an electric 12 string would be one that sounds like the Ric, but allows Taylor-like string spacing.

^^^...completely ignoring the 6/12 Gibson SG......

I did play a Peavey Hydra 6/12 some years ago and the humbuckers in it sounded just fine. The Korean Dano 12-string I had a few years back also sounded nice with lipsticks. Really it depends on your preference, but to answer the original question, yes, any pickup will work with a 12-string. The string pairs are not spaced so far apart that they'd be outside the range of the pole pieces (i.e. you don't need some custom Parallel Axis type thing or rail/bar pickups for 12-strings).

Re: 12 string pickups?

An old band mate of mine had a 10 string BC Rich Bich. While not exactly a 12 string it covers the same sonic territory. I remember when he got it. All the crazy switches had been gutted and it had a pair of OBL L500's and a single volume pot. Holy hell that guitar was bright and klangy. We tried a few different pickups in it. First i put a 490R/T set that I had rolling around in it and they were better but not what he was after to play the thrash/hard rock covers we were doing. After that we tried a pair of Super D's the bridge was good but the neck was just mush. In the end he wound up with a Tone Zone and a Humbucker from hell in it.

My memory says that any humbucker will work it doesnt need to be 12 string specific but just tonally compatible with the guitar.

side note... at the end of it all he wound up playing it as just a 6 string guitar anyways.

Re: 12 string pickups?

What guitar is it for?

I've tried a few with an Epiphone double-neck; The Jazz in the neck position had a nice top end, but a really messy bottom. 490R/498T was ok, if uninspiring. I've struggled to get something I like, so have ordered some Triple Shot mounting rings, to have more options available when trying things out.

Re: 12 string pickups?

I built a 12-string Strat, and I but SSL-1s in the neck and middle and a StraBro 90 in the bridge. A mini-humbucker might be cool, but for me humbuckers are going to rob a 12-string of its sparkle and chime - it's always easier to warm up a tone than to brighten it.

Re: 12 string pickups?

It depends on what you want from the 12-string, though. Not everyone wants the Byrds' chime and jangle.

IF you want something similar to the Byrds'...I really lucked out with a Japanese Fender 12 string with 7.25 radius fretboard and lipstick pickups. The high end really rings and there is very noticeable separation and articulation of strings and notes.
