12 string solid bodied electrics

Who has one around here?

Thinking about getting one of those Cozart kits off eBay and chucking a set
of lipsticks I got floating around and trick switching.
Not sure if their bridge has intonation for each string but I have a Gotoh knockoff anyway.
$120 plus post is cheap and I'm sure it will show up in materials and quality but I can
handle most things other than a useless neck. Their necks are nice and wide at 1 and 15/16 wide
and come with a slotted nut. If the nut measures OK, I can cut a new one out of bone.

Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated.

Cheers, Will

Re: 12 string solid bodied electrics

I have two MIK DanElectro Innuendo 12-strings. Kind of a Dali-esque Strat, with built-in effects. They're cheesy, but the delay, tremolo and chorus aren't too bad. Distortion is horrible and unusable. Crappy single-coils, but they sound better than their pedigree. I love the neck. Mini Grover tuners, graphite nut, and a solid Gotoh 12-string bridge. Neck is perfect for me, not too narrow, not too wide. Great value.

I would love to have a better quality guitar but they're hard to find without going to Ric. I would love to have a Strat-based 12-string, using the Z-Coil pickups from the G&L Comanche. I may build one from Warmoth.

One of the nicest mid-priced 12-strings I've played recently was a used Burns (Bison?). Should have bought it.

I like the 12-strings. I use them in my sets with my band, and I also have a couple of Takamine electro-acoustic dreads, EF381SC, and they are also a great value. I don't do a lot of songs on them, but the audience response is always very positive.

I'm designing one on a chambered Jazzcaster body - maple over ash, Tele routing. I think I'll end up building my own neck - bubinga over maple, with a 25" scale, and scarf jointed headstock.

Not a twelve, but close. My wife got me a BC Rich Perfect 10 Bich (10-string) earlier this year, and it's a lot of fun. The difference from a twelve is that the low E and A strings are only a single course, but the other strings are all doubled just like a normal 12-string. Solid mahogany body and thru neck with 24 frets and Duncan Designed HB-102s (JB/Jazz).

Looks and sounds great, and like Bill said, audience response is always really good! Not one for every song by any means, but really cool sound in the right setting.

There's a Nash 12 tele in the shop I work in. It's a super cool guitar. I never knew I wanted one, but it would be a very fun toy!

I have a 1980 Rickenbacker 425-12. Neck pickup died so I put the Gibson minihumbuckers from my Firebird in there and now it's awesome. I would recommend hummers over singles in 12-strings.

Wait, you got a wife that actually buys you guitars?

Nice axe Trey, what do all the controls do?

Lol... yeah. We're actually separated at the moment, but working on stuff. She was at my place this weekend and actually said that she missed my guitars!

The three knobs are Bridge Volume, Neck Volume, and Master Tone. The three minis are splits (one for each pickup) and phase reverse. The chickenhead is a varitone filter (which is worthless IMO... trying to decide what to replace it with).

...and I don't mind too much if you call me Trey, 'cause he's a great guy, but most people call me "Bri!" [emoji6][emoji12][emoji23]

Re: 12 string solid bodied electrics

I've always kinda wanted a 12-String electric. It's not high on my list of things to get, but it'll wind up near the top eventually. I'd have a lot of fun working up cool parts for a song or two per night on one.

Definitely check out the Reverend Airwave - as with all Reverend's it's a great player, at an amazing quality-price point.

BriGuy is an awesome dude so glad someone thought I was a better dude than myself!

Back to the OP, I've contemplated a 12 String solid body but I rarely play my 12 String acoustic so I've never pulled the plug on one. I think the kit would be a great way to go, my concern would be the amount of fret work but sounds like a cool project.

A tad off topic but what I wish were more available is a 12 string mandolin. I've played one once and loved it, just didn't have a grand sitting around at the time...came back later and it had already sold. There are some on eBay but I'm not familiar with Goldtone products.

Never heard of one... what is it, four courses of 3 strings?

They are awesome–its bascially a mandolin sized 12 string so you play it just like a guitar but it sounds like a Mandolin. This is the one I played and it was really cool.

Yeah, I like that! Wish it had a third pickup.

And I like single coils much better for 12-string guitar. Humbuckers seem to take away too much of the sparkle.

Another one I had and sold was a Daisy Rock Retro-12-H. Nice guitar, comparable to the DanElectros I have, but I much preferred the DanElectro.

I've seen a few of those around. Keller Williams plays one with Keller and the Keels, but he takes at least one pair of strings off and plays it much more like a mandolin than a guitar.

FWIW, GoldTone actually makes some pretty quality stuff. I'm probably going to end up with a Gold Tone resonator at some point, and I've been eyeballing the their electric banjos for years.
