12AY7 vs 12AX7

Re: 12AY7 vs 12AX7

Your welcome. Groove Tubes are actually all relabeled tubes tested and selected by GT. Just so you'd know you just might have stuck another EHX in there.
The only factories still producing tubes are New Sensor, Shuguang, JJ and Svetlana. Ruby Tubes, TAD, GT, etc. are all relabeled versions of these.

Svetlana[SED Winged-C] no longer makes tubes, they shut the factory down :(

Re: 12AY7 vs 12AX7

new tubes, or the coolest hand picked NOS tubes...none of them make as big a difference to your tone as the right speaker.

+1 Used 75 Watt Celestions for a long time and was always tweaking with whatever amp/guitar combo that went through those. Switched to EV's and the old 65 Watt Celestions and finally got to spend more time actually playing.
Glad to see those tubes are working out for you.

That sucks. Buddy of mine had their 6L6 installed and that sounded killer. Pricey though.
Heard rumours about EI restarting again though. They had some pretty good 12ax7 tubes. Their 6ca7's supposed to be pretty good too.

Are those the stock speakers that come in the Marshall 1960a cabs ? I can't stand those speakers... No matter what head I ran through them I always sounded thin and ice picky.

So far so good with the 12ay7 though. I actually find my amp to be kinda muddy with it now though but I have not messed with the amps EQ as much yet so I'm sure I could brighten it up. I would definitely suggest this tube to anyone having issues with brightness in their amps.

Yup. They sounded fine to me with single coils though, but most of my guitars have humbuckers. The scooped mids made everything kinda nasal sounding.
The worst I've played through were those smaller Marshall 4×12 cabs. Like the standard cabs, but without any bottom end.

One another note, have you tried the JJ in V1? It's pretty high gain, but noticeably warmer than the EHX.
I have a JJ in v1 and an EHX in v2 of my Engl E530 and that's the combo for that preamp imo. Warm sparkly cleans with the JJ and the EHX tightens the gain up nicely.

I haven't tried the JJ in V1 but I will try that combo. Might be a good match for this Ampeg too.

Unlike my VT-22 this Reverb Rocket is sensitive to preamp tubes. The VT-22 sounds pretty much the same no matter what preamp tubes I throw in which is why I threw the EHX 12ax7s in it..

Re: 12AY7 vs 12AX7

take this with a grain of salt:
of the few different ones i have on hand, i actually preferred the sound of the EHX 12ax7s to JJs and sovteks, but found the EHXs to be quite microphonic. they don't fill me with confidence physically, but they do have some detail that i didn't hear in the others. i wouldn't rely on them in a gigging/rehearsal amp (ie yours), but for little recording (pre)amps they're pretty cool.
the JJs i tried were the quietest and seem the least fragile. obviously hitting them with a stick while live is not a good idea, so it's difficult to be 100% certain.
i consider sovteks to be the best "all-rounder".

re the 12AY/T/U7 thing, this may be of interest

if this is your amp, you've only got a 50W speaker in a 50W amp that you're probably running pretty hard, so a speaker upgrade is very good advice indeed IMO. any 8ohm speaker above 60W is worth looking at, but i've heard of guys really liking 100+W celestions in 1x12 combos.
does your reverbrocket have 6L6s or EL34s? i doubt it would be a straight swap, but 5881s could be a good output tube to consider too. i saw one on the web just now where someone had put KT66s in one.

thanks for the input.. mine is the 2x12 version... I'm seriously considering getting new speakers once I have money next month. I love the sound of the ampeg but I want it louder even and to disperse sound better while still being warm and full sounding (no ice pick)

If you guys have some speaker suggestions please feel free to leave them here, I would appreciate it. From what I read in the manual the amp has a 8 ohm load.. Not sure what the speakers are rated at to be honest.

Re: 12AY7 vs 12AX7

Kinda depends on what your looking for in speaker.
If your looking for something efficient that will not further colour your tone, the EV12-L can't be beat imo. I've got 2 of those in a Mesa cab and it's tight and deep on the bottom and well defined no matter what. Can easily compete with with any 4×12 when it comes to power, clarity and thump.
