15" speaker for my Bandmaster?

I'm thinking of using a 15" speaker with my BF Bandmaster or my SF Bandmaster Reverb for a little variety. My question is, what 15" should I use? It'll probably be in a closed back cab and I'll be using it to play clean and some overdrive. I have little experience with 15" speakers, so any help is appreciated. :beerchug:

Bandmasters are 4 ohms...do you plan to use only one speaker??? If so you're gonna have to find a 4 ohm 15, as far as I know thats really gonna limit you to a Weber, however thats not all bad...a Ceramic Cali 15 can be had brand new with a 4 ohm voice coil and shoudl sound quite nice in a BF/SF Fender amp.

Yeah, I was thinking about one speaker...a vintage sized cab wouldn't hold two 15"s would it? I guess I could use one of my 8 ohm Swamp Thangs and an 8 ohm 15" in parallel...but I'm not sure how that would sound.

Re: 15" speaker for my Bandmaster?

I believe the RI 'Jensen' C15N is available in 4 ohms...not a bad choice, but the ceramic Weber Thames or Cali 15" (with a paper dome) are way better speakers for a few shekels more...I have a Cali 15" with the big paper dome and that is one great speaker; not as JBL-ish as you might think.

The other option is a beefier multi-tap OT so you can use 8 ohm speakers---not a cardinal sin in a Bandmaster, where one of the weak points is the small OT.

I wasn't wanting to change the OT, but it sure would open up more options for me. Thing is, I wonder how a different OT would change the tone.

I had considered getting a combo cab made for the head just so I could move it more easily; of course this is easily reverseable though.

I'd go with a 4 ohm Cali 15 and don't forget to add a Beam Blocker - 15's can be really beamy on guitar.

I have a few of the '35 watt' 6L6 model Fenders (ala BM, Pro Reverb, Vibrolux); all have the small OT's. Some people like them because they break up fast. I like the bigger low end and dynamics you get from Bassman/Super size '50 watt' iron.

I found a custom Rodgers BF cab for 3x10" that is cut for a Bandmaster---sounds great with a 2.7 ohm load and a Bassman OT. The amp Fender should have made...

Re: 15" speaker for my Bandmaster?

I'd just like to say that one time, I plugged my 68 Bassman into some random Fender 1x15 cabinet at a rehearsal space, and it was the crunchiest tone I've ever gotten. Crunchier than the Marshall 1969A with vintage 30's I tried after that. I think 15's have long been overlooked for producing rockin guitar tones...can't wait to hear what your rig sounds like.
