15 speakers tested- pick your favorite

Re: 15 speakers tested- pick your favorite

I hear a difference in all of them, and think the amps settings are a moot point.

Some of them are going to be tighter than others no matter how you'd turn those knobs. The V30 and G12T75 for instance sound way different to me in terms of bright and dark.

I don't think you can get rid of or compensate for all of that with every speaker, and if you could, then why would someone lay out the $$$ to replace the speaker in their cab or amp? Why would anyone prefer any speaker over another if you could?

I think the G12M, the K-100 and the Gold sounded best. I even liked the EV and the G12M70, as they present a tighness with an open midrange that complements what he's playing well, IMO.

The V30 sounded best to me followed by the greenback. Though I thought the greenback had the most complex sound of any of the lot.

I couldn't tell much of a difference from one to another on my computor speakers. I think the amp's gain tone over rides everything here. I couldn't hear the differences I have noticed with my own rigs.

your computer speakers are not so good - there's a huge difference between them all. I was surprised at how different they were.

if i had to pick one, that would be the K-100. The 70 Eighty sounds really great for the price too. the Tubby Tone, EV and JBL speakers sound muddy to my ears.
i'd love to hear a clean-settings comparison too.

Same here ;)

A 100% clean tone, maybe using a Deluxe Reverb, and then a just-breaking-up tone, ala George Thorogood.

PS: the test was valid even though the amp settings didn't necessarily showcase any particular speaker. But, then again, isn't that the point of a fair comparison test?

Personally, I thought it was a great test, and holding the settings constant was the way to go. I own an amp with a Seventy-80, and I think that speaker sounds like ass. I hear that in these tests, and based on these results, an H30 or a Greenback is the way to go for me.

I see this as being like the SD pickup clips. No, I didn't have a Marshall or a Les Paul at the time, but when I heard the JB clips, it sure sounded like a JB to me. I realized that that was the sound I did not want, and that the Custom had what I was missing. Sure enough, after the Custom arrived, it sounded just like I had imagined from those clips.
