Unfortunately, some people don't have the luxury of trying a bunch of Custom Shop Gibsons locally. For me options were limited to GC and Apple Music when I was looking. Ordering from a reputable online dealer has been known to be successful for some people as some dealers can describe and measure necks, describe each guitars tone, and find a good fit upon giving them a good idea of what your looking for. Having said that, I ended up getting my R8 from Centre City Music in San Diego before Gibson booted Saul to the curb. I was fortunate enough to catch Jason (aka TattooedCarrot) at Centre City Music when I called in and was offered a black R8 that he was very fond of. Is it up there with the best of the best?.... I can't say. It is a very good sounding and playing LP (very lively sounding and has a neck that isn't to thick and isn't to thin).

Had bad experiences at Apple...won't buy there anymore. Which leaves GC in our area, and they don't many Historics, if any.

Glad you got hooked up at City Centre. But....a black '58...

You seem to be in love with old Les Pauls. Now for the hard part: Tell me WHY!

I could care less. Played a crapton of Les Pauls in my life. There is really no rhyme or reason to the ones I love. 70-'s maple are my preferred necks, followed by the baseball bats. Whatever on the year. They make thick necks all over the decades.

Which guitar will I LOVE for my whole life? I quote Jeff H. " It has to pass the Booby test; If it feels like the first boobies you ever touched, that is the guitar. " Gotta play a lot - and say no to a lot to find her. And the year 1958 has nothing to do with what feels like that for me. It could be any Les Paul.

And of course - are you playing this or is it a case queen? I could care less about collecting. It will get dropped like all the rest. And I could care even less about investments or value holding. Kudo's to Bill for letting them ponies run!

But again - that's me. I want to here WHY you need that particular Les Paul. Like I said - being old makes old. After the basic Les Paul sound, I'll hit the electronics any old way I please to make her sound sweet to me.

The one in the OP is priced as a flame top. But not only is that the lamest figuring this side of westford, it has an ugly black streak. Somehow they forget to take that into the price.

I can support wanting a historic but the new prices are a bit out of whack. Especially this particular one.

I just want a Les Paul. I really don't care what year or whatever, it just has to feel and sound great to me as well as look nice. I'll definitely be playing it, I don't do the case queen thing and I don't sell my guitars. I still have every guitar that I ever bought, which is five plus an acoustic and a bass.

I'm just keeping my options wide open. I recently tried a 2015 Traditional and liked it but I'd rather not have the G Force. So if there are "better" Les Pauls out there, I'm going to find one.

If you have the cash I highly support getting a historic. Just the ABR bridge brings it closer to where it should be and many of them are just good. And I don't perceive the neck width as a problem, playing wise, not to mention it might contribute to sound. And heavy tuners are the devil. Sometimes.

Reselling one that you pay new price for will be brutal, though.

And don't buy one with streaks. Resell is even worse. Unless you know you'll keep forever.

I'll be looking at as many as possible over time. Also, I don't plan on reselling it. I've never done it and never want to. My guitars mean a lot to me. I still have my first guitar which I bought with my own money after playing a rental and borrowing guitars for 3 years. I just want a KILLER Les Paul and don't want to skimp on it.

I have a 2005 R8 I bought brand new and I gotta be honest...easily one of the best guitar purchases I ever made!

The CS stuff is a cut above and they get better every year.

Don't worry about the "play a bunch" or "cull through to get a "good one"" stuff...I've played a ton of Historic/VOS and CS Gibson stuff over the past 15-20 years and can honestly say I'd be happy to own any one of them.

Go for it!

^ Thats another reason for historics.......the consistency of 'great players' is WAY higher.

Its a theme for those who own or have had many historics - its the only ones the owners would buy sight unseen.

I would like to say I trust the custom shop, and I don't know that be ever heard a bad thing about them.

But I don't trust Gibson an inch.

Step one - make sure it FEELS GOOD

Step two - make sure you like the looks.

Good electric sound is just a pickup swap away

So far, of all the Les Pauls I've tried, about 8 different ones from 2008 to 2015, I like the 2015's the best.

With that much money to burn... go play a Knaggs and find out if you really want another cookie cutter guitar.

Besides being ugly as sin no matter what Knaggs ever does for better or worse they will never be a Les Paul.

The Kenai isn't ugly at all. It's very well proportioned in reality. Sure it ain't a Les Paul but it ain't no corpo-scam either.

This guy is serious about building guitars rather than about vacuuming your wallet.
