In 1969 a guitarist bought a pale blue fender tele 262596 and they played six nights a week all over Ireland by about 1976 it was wrecked. I bought it in a small music shop for about $80. The body and the neck were separated there was just a trace of the original blue on the body and it was all in a plastic grocery bag. The year before I had bought two old stock Gigson humbucker pickups silver with black frames that came in a Gibson labelled box and I got them cheap about $20 as they had been sitting in the glass display cabinet for a few years. I had the mad idea to build a mahogany bodied tele with Gibson pickups but this idea died after a few moths. About 1981 I routed out a slot big enough to take the two humbuckers and I enlarged the area for the electrics also to take a gibson style wiring system. The latter was a bit of a disaster the router ( a drill with a router bit attached held by hand with someone else holding th guitar body) went a bit mad and came through the bottom side of the body along side of the input jack. Fortunately it didn't go through the body. I got married shortly afterwards, and fortunately all these parts were wrapped up in a drawer in the shed, fortunately I say because I also had a 1967 start in perfect condition that I sold for $350 and a 1967 jazz bass that I also sold for $350. I weep tears of regret at the thought of having given them away now. About 2005
I came across the tele in the bag and the kids were raised so I decided to get the tele painted and assembled locally it's an ok job but not great it was painted black, I now can't find the original pickups
I fear the wife might have thrown them out when she cleaned up the shed when I was ill a few years ago. At this stage you are either laughing or crying or asleep, So to the dilemma in the header.
1 DO I TRY AND GET THE TELE BACK TO ORIGINAL STATE IF I CAN FIND OR BUY ORIGINAL FENDER PICKUPS
2 THE BODY HAS FILLER IN IT TO FILL IN THE BIG HOLE FOR THE GIBSON ELECTRICS. SO DO I LEAVE THIS IN OR IS THERE A WAY TO REPLACE THAT SECTIONOF THE BODY WITH NEW TIMBER
3 KEEP THE NECK PICKUP AND REPLACE THE BRIDGE WHICH IS OUT OF LINE WITH THE STRINGS
4 GET THE TELE REPAINTED TO ORIGINAL COLOUR OR SOME OTHER PERIOD COLOUR I LIKE e.g.
ANTIQUE CHERRY OR CANDY APPLE RED
5 THE FRETBOARD WHICH IS ORIGINAL IS WORN THIN YOU WOULD ALSO IF YOU BEEN PLAYED
WITH FOR SEVEN YEARS.
6 THE FRETS ARE OK I THINK IT WAS REFRETTED ON A MONDAY IN THE MID 1970s
7 THE MACHINE HEADS ARE GGOTOH I THINK THESE WERE THE THIRD SET ON THE TELE
8 TO FIT THE BRIDGE HUMBUCKER I CUT OFF THE PART FOR THE ORIGINAL PICKUP
I attach photos of this badly injured Fender Telecaster which when you crank it up sounds awesome
even in its injured state.
Any one with suggestions other than having her put down humanely is much appreciated.
