Re: 1979 Dean V Value

Dean was really popular back in the early 80's too. I personally don't see their new popularity as a sign of things to come, instead more of a "in the right place at the right time." They do make some nice products but I wouldn't buy any for investment purposes.

Having said that, in terms of features and specs it looks like a really nice guitar to play. A little on the high side in terms of price perhaps but not unreasonable especially if you have an emotional attachment to it or 1979.

Re: 1979 Dean V Value

I just scored a 1979 Z for a great price just South of $950 with shipping but it has an old headstock repair. Gonna be here the end of the week or so. Loaded with Frailins too. :approve: :cool2: :)

If you like it and are buying to play and enjoy. If you maintain it well while in your possesion you SHOULD be able to get your money in it back. MAYBE even make a lil. You wanna make profit or buy a decent 29 year old guitar? :scratchch :drill: :13:

That seller is a Dean Forum guy. Nice guy too.

I just looked at your deal a lil closer. Lil more money than I think a Flame Series V is worth but they are going up in value. Me personally would spend that kinda money wiser. I just got anear mint 2004 Hamer Korina Vector in August for $1850. :scratchch

Re: 1979 Dean V Value

Hey guys!

So I'm looking at this sweet looking and sounding patent pending '79 Dean V on the bay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=220291197492&Category=2384&_trksid=p3907.m29 )

And I'm wondering if you think the asking price of $1700 is reasonable? I mean, nowadays Dean is getting really popular, and their new USA models are crazy expensive, so in terms of an investment, as well as a sweet player's instrument, what do you guys think?:scratchch

I think $1700 for a 70's era Flame series is WAY too much. I love Deans and I have a '79 Z Standard (which have more workmanship in them, by the way), but there's no way it's worth a grand & a half.

Re: 1979 Dean V Value

I'd been wondering who picked up that Z, Gene- nice score, I came real close to pulling the trigger on that one a few weeks back.

As for the V in question, that V has been up on ebay several times over the past several months. I think it's obvious it's priced too high.

That said, the guitar sounds fantastic, and the playability and tone MAY make it worth that to an individual, unfortunately you can't play it first on Ebay (obviously).

As another counterpoint we are talking "custom shop" work and Honduras mahogany on that old Dean- try finding a V today made with the same quality and Honduras mahogany for that price- Dean uses African Mahogany these days, as do most manufacturers, barring a few like Hamer, and Gibsons Custom shop and some of the super pricey guys like McInturff, etc.

Bottom line, it's not much of an investment. Older Deans do go for decent money, but they still are not like PRS, Gibson or higher end Fenders for commanding and holding value. Current USA Deans have horrible re-sale, and newer Hamers are not a whole lot better.

Re: 1979 Dean V Value

Awesome, I think I'll pass on this guy then, though I'm wanting a new guitar of course for its playability, I was looking for that "omg, this is the best deal ever" sort of justification to this spur of the moment purchase hehe.

Anyways, thanks guys!
