1999 MIM Strat

My local music store has been selling a lot of good stuff on consignment. I recently picked up an amp and a few pedals.

I went in yesterday and he had a blue strat that caught my eye. He said it's a 60s reissue 1999 MIM. It has a white pick guard and a rosewood fretboard. It looks like mint condition - no visible wear at all.

He wants $400 for it. Is that a good price?

I already have 5 electrics, including a heavily modded strat clone - so it will be hard to justify to my wife. I probably won't get it - but I can't get it out of my mind.

Tell me I can get a better deal elsewhere.

$400 sounds close to the top price for that guitar.... but since it sounds like it's in NOS dead mint condition it sounds like a good deal

The last 3 MIM's I bought I paid less than $200 each, 2 were in very good condition and one was rough ($60). So it seems a little high. If it's consignment, some people think their guitar is better than new...

Yes, it's a good price. List is about $925 and sells for about $650 at MF, used prices typically are 1/2 list, and you say it's mint. This is a MIM 60's Classic, not a $399 MIM standard , so you will pay more than for a used standard. The bridge is the weakest point on this model -- the block is smaller and the saddles are shorter than on the Amerian Vintage 62 Reissue, which lists for nearly $2,000 and sells for over $1,400 new at MF. So for the price differential, you can buy an American Vintage Reissue bridge for under $100, new or used, and replace the part. The pickups are staggered pole Alnico 5 like on the Amerian Vintage 62 Reissue, except that the coil forms are plastic rather than fiberboard. You can replace the pickups and the bridge and still be ahead. However, pre-2003 painted MIM 50s and 60s Classics have poplar bodies, rather than the alder used in 1998-2002 sunburst 50s and 60s Classics and in all 2003 and after MIM standards and 50s and 60s Classics.
