Hello everyone, I've been lurking around here for a long time so I joined up and I want to share the knowledge and experiences that I have gotten so far.
I recently won a JBJ and it arrived before the snowstorms hit Ga. I was trapped for a couple of days so I decided to install the pickup. This pickup has no logo on the bobbins which are clean and shiny, long legs and no "Made In America" embossed on the back and of course the JBJ sticker.
The guitar I chose is a 1985 Kramer Focus 1000. Alder body,maple neck/rosewood board,OFR, 1 slanted hum and 1 vol control,all original.
I installed a new cts 500k vol pot(I did'nt measure it for accuracy) quality wiring and a new switchcraft input jack then the pickup then the pickup.
I hooked up to my Mesa single recto with a 1982 Carvin 4x12 with original 1982 Celestion G12-50's(the good ones)and starting playing,at stage volume, adjusting and fine tuning the pickup. It did't take long to get good usable tone. The bass was slightly loose and the treble was slightly harsh but nothing serious as other users have stated.
Next I started experimenting with capacitors. I don't use the caps that most people use,I use the caps from a donated 1960 Conn organ. They're manufactured by Good-All and Blue Moulded companies. They're old and I'm sure are out of spec but they give a nice vintage sound.
After going thre several caps I settled for .001 Good-All cap, it removed enough treble freqencies and allowed the bass to tighten and the treble to soften.
A little more fine tuning and this pickup in this guitar ROCKS!!! The thing screams, sings, grinds and does anthing my hands can make it do!!!
I highly recommend everyone try one of these old JBJ's. Idk if it's MoJo goodness or internet hype or just my ears but this pickup is awsome and will stay in this guitar.
I've got a couple of Kramer Foci and I may try a new vs. old comparison but I'm very happy withis one. I have pics and sound clips and I will add them when I learn how.
Rock On!!!!!
Rock On!!!!!!!!

I'd be interested to know how you get on if you were to install a "regular" JB in there for comparison.

Re: 1st post-JBJ Content

I also own a JBJ. This topic is discussed widely in the forum.

The probable explanation seems to be the magnet. All other should identical to a new production pickup. The nowadays stock magnet are of asian origin and didnt see 30 years of use.

One of these new UORC A5 should bring also some magic into a recent JB. Did anyone do that?

Re: 1st post-JBJ Content

Stupid question but... what does JBJ stand for? JB wounded by Maricela Juarez?

You got it.

Oh, it's MJ Mojo! Mid to early '80 was before they got the winders from Gibsons Kalamazoo plant. There's some contradicting info on the JB being the same throughout it's history. Just sayin'!

I have considered doing an "Old vs. New" comparison but the subject has been pounded into the ground. Eventually I will do a comparison. The next guitar I have that will recieve a Jb will be a 1988 Carvin DC-127T. It's a maple neckthru with ebony board, hard maple wings and OFR. It's not as bright as you would think it would be.
