1st thread..Need opinions

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

well from what u just described, most fitting, IMO, is the JB or Duncan Distortion.

as the rest have said as well, the Jazz neck is a pretty cool pickup with the ability to handle high gain quite well. it gives you very nice cleans as well. so the versatility is there.

so my recommendation DD/Jazz or JB/Jazz :smokin:

Yeah, i'm now gearing towards the DD/Jazz combo now..This is why I joined this board..To get a better insight from real Duncan users/experts...It is one thing to read descriptions and listening to 15 second clips of each pickups..But it is quite another thing to hear recommendations from actual real life users.

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

Things i'm looking for in a bridge PU:Thick..Crunchy..Tight low end (with no muddyness when palm muting)..definition in the strings when doing power chords, will have sufficient mids to cut through live, with enough power to push my high gain/ cranked Marshall over the top! Which one comes closest to my needs?

It sounds to me like you are describing a DiMarzio Super Distorion or a Super 3. Paired with a Super 2 or PAF in the neck, you'd have a killer LP combo that will scare small children and make your Marshall beg for mercy.

Another that I would suggest would be a Vintage Gibson Dirty Fingers (Not the re-issue). They're fat, powerful and reasonably defined but aren't potted so they can be a bit feedback-y...

Good luck in your tone search.

Trevor

Thanks for your insight Trevor! So it's your opinion I would get that tone with a DiMarzio instead of a Duncan? I've previously owned 16 Les Paul's, and at least two of them had the Dirty Fingers..I remember them being feedback monsters..I don't think I'd bother getting them.

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

Hi..This is my first thread on this board..I just purchased a "made in Japan" Tokai "Love Rock" guitar (high quality Les Paul copy). Typical LP woods (mahogany body w/maple top, 1-piece mahogany setneck w/rosewood fingerboard). I've decided to swap the stock pickups with something more aggressive and full sounding.

I play in a Black Metal band and we are currently recording our second album. The gear that this guitar will play through are: 1987 Marshall JCM 800 (model 2210 100 watts) w/ 4x12 Marshall cab (loaded with 75 watt Celestions), a Randall VMAX 300 watt head and 4x12 Warhead cab. I also practice through a Crate G-40C w/ two 8" speakers. I occasionally use a Vox Bulldog distortion pedal too.

I'm also in a second band which plays old-school '77 punk' styled music, along with some raunchy rock 'n roll, which, soundwise is quite different from the black metal stuff but still "full and loud sounding".

After doing some intensive research on the net, listening to sample clips and reading many reviews on Harmony Central, i've decided on getting a SH-10 Full Shred in the bridge position..Do you guys think this is a good choice considering the guitar, the gear used and both music styles I play? The second question is this: Would a Full Shred (neck) be complimentary to the bridge Full Shred? If not, what about the SH-2n Jazz for the neck PU?

The main reasoning for a Full Shred in both positions is asthetics..I noticed that the FS has double rows of Allen screw pole pieces..It would look better IMO to have two similar looking PU's....Opinions??

I think a set of Full Shreds would RULE in that guitar for the type of music you describe. Go get 'em, then make some clips for us to hear the results! :-)

The Full Shreds are amazingly expressive pickups. :-)

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

Hey everyone! I believe i've made my decision:

Bridge: SH-6b distortion
Neck: SH-2n jazz

The stock pickups and trim on this guitar are double creme..Since I've noticed that SD doesn't make this particular color, i'm going to go with black/creme zebra..It should look cool on this guitar.

I have one last question though: Les Paul's with standard stop tailpiece and bridge take normal sized humbuckers and not the "Trembuckers" right?

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

Congrats on your decision, I think you will very pleased with that combo. Regular spaced buckers will be fine in the LP.

I would measure the string spread. Some newer Les Pauls have wide spaced strings at the bridge. The pole spacing measurements are on SD's Website so you can compare.

Honestly, I'm a JB fan. I'd try the Hot Rodded combo: if you don't like it, there's the real-world exchange policy. Anyways, I only suggest this because the Hot Rodded combo is very versatile. However, if you want all-out drop-tuned kill-everyone tone, for passive pickups I'd suggest a Custom. If that's still not insane enough for you, there's the Live Wire Metal humbucker (it's active), which is pretty much the most insanely evil sounding pickup you can buy.

If you prefer actives, by the way, the Hot Rodded combo has a partner, sort of: the Dave Mustain Signature set (it's active). The fast version of the story is that Dave Mustain used the Hot Rodded combo for almost forever in Megadeth, and only recently asked for an active set from Seymour Duncan. They're voiced the same, so they should both basically be equivalent, except obviously one set is passive, one active.

Good luck! :)

Re: 1st thread..Need opinions

The Custom sounds fantastic, but I do like the idea of the DD in the bridge.

Yeah..I'm now 100% certain about the SH-6b distortion in the bridge position.

I'm flexible with the neck PU because I seldom use the neck PU..As of now, i'm going with the Jazz..But could change my mind if many of you think I should do otherwise..As long as the neck PU is considered a "good match" to the DD, then i'm happy. Next Tuesday or Wednesday (after the New years holidays) i'll be placing my order.

Speaking of "placing my order" I called my local music store (Musicstop) and was shock and angered after asking if they could get both of those PU's, and at what price. Can you believe that they said that they can get them for $130+ taxes apiece!! I told them that the manufacturer's suggested prices of those PUs was $99! Unbelievable! A check on eBay shows I can get them new for $69.95, postage included to Canada..That's $140 USD ($163 CAD) for both PUs!...I'd save approximately $112 CAD by purchasing them through eBay..Which I will certainly do..I read somewhere on this forum that "Bada Bing" is an eBay seller? I'll probably support him and go through him if he sells them for $69.95 (or less)...

The Jazz will definitely make you happy. Super clean with an almost 80s scooped sound. Hope you have luck finding the other pickup.

Well, I wanna say that the pickups arrived a couple of days ago (thanks "Bada Bing!") and they were installed in the guitar earlier today..And all I can say is WOW!!! I didn't think my JCM 800 could sound any better/crunchier but man, was I wrong! The SH-6 is an awesome pickup, the best i've ever owned..PERIOD!!! I don't remember the last time I had so much fun playing the guitar, haha! I finally stopped when my ears started hurtin'...Couldn't get myself to turn the Marshall down...Anyhoo, I want to thank everyone who helped me make my decision in my quest for the best PU's for my guitar..
