1x12 amp recommendations

Re: 1x12 amp recommendations

I know a lot of people really like the Classic 30, but I've haven't had very good experiences with them. I bought my Mesa DC-3 for not much more than the price of Classic 30, and it simply blows the Peavey away. The Mesa is much better made and more versatile. BTW, the cabinets of the Classic 30 are MDF, and they don't hold up under heavy use.

I'm sure you could find a Blues Deluxe, SuperSonic or even a DRRI that would do the job. Myself, I'd rather invest in a Mesa Mark III. Get one that has the reverb, EQ, and the Simul-Class option--and hopefully the EVM speaker--and you'll have an amp that will last a lifetime and can handle any gig. And some of the newer Mesas can be scaled down to as little as 5 watts.

Bill, does your mesa have an fx loops? What kind of speakers come with it? I have hankering for this one

Re: 1x12 amp recommendations

Older Mesa came with a variety of speakers: the EVM at the top, then their Celestion C-90, the Eminence MS-12, and a 50-watt Jensen. Newer Mesas often use UK made Vintage 30s, the C-90s, and now they have a couple of new Fillmore Speakers made by Eminence.

The new mini-Recto Reverb is a really cool amp. I've got major GAS for one! And they work not only for Metal, like its big brothers, but it can definitely handle blues, classic rock, and country gigs too. I'm actually a little stunned at how good the clean tone is. For a few bucks more, the Express 5:25 and 5:50 have a little more versatility due to the 5-band EQ, but not the metal voicing of the mini Recto.

I think pretty much all Mesas have efx loops, and they're usually pretty good. Most of the bigger amps have foot switchable loops--very handy.

I just came home from sam ash with a blackstar ht40. It is exactly what I was looking for tone wise, size, and versatility. Thanks a bunch guys

I own one and have had it for close to two years and it has served me well.

Re: 1x12 amp recommendations

used vht pittbull 45. unreal clean tones and edge of breakup tones. it has its own thing going on, too - there are fendery settings, and some voxy settings, but it doesn't really sound too close to either. clean channel is incredible. the gain channel is awesome, too. light breakup to classic rock heavy. not a metal amp without a boost/od up front, but it can get there with your preferred pedal.

i nabbed mine recently, and am very glad i did. it's 45 watts, and loud as all get out. the fx loop level control can act as a master volume, though. really cool for pushed clean channel sounds at lower volumes.

EDIT: looks like you grabbed a blackstar - congrats and good luck with the amp!

Call me a country boy, but I was drawn to the mini recto for tone and a simpler layout. I love those 1:50 and the other but feel like I am in NASA launch control!

Egnater Tweaker 40. It's a very versatile amp, and they are very affordable, especially if you buy at the right time, using coupons, sales, etc.

The Mesas at first glance can be daunting, I will admit. But for me, I use the RONCO "set it and forget it" approach. I found tones that work for my style and pretty much go with those, with maybe minimal tweaking at the gig. I just don't let tech stuff like that intimidate me, I just learn how to work with it. I figure, if others can do it, then so can I. And the payoff for that has been that I really like the tones that I get from these amps.

Recording is a little different. I haven't recorded with the Mark V yet, but the Mark IV has so many options that change the way the power section responds, it is an amazing amp to have in the studio. I've invested the time in it--I know where to go get the sounds I like, so it's worth the effort.
