2 2x12 vs 4x12 cab?

Has someone done that comparison? I would prefer to get 2 2x12 instead of a 4x12 just for portability but I am not sure about the differences tonewise.
Please, chime in :reporter:

I'm in the process of building a rig almost exactly like this. I've opted for 2 open backed Bluesbreaker styled cabs. I think the biggest thing is do you want to go open or closed back? 2 closed backs will sound more like a typical 4x12 and give you that lower end punch. My goal, though, was to create more of a super Bluesbreaker which is why I went open back.

Two 2x12s will move the same amount of air as a 4x12, but it'll sound like two 2x12s and not a single 4x12 due to the voicing differences in the different cabs.

If you like the way the 2x12s sound then that's great. If you were hoping to get the sound of a 4x12 then you might not get there, particularly if the 2x12 version sounds significantly different than the 4x12 to begin with.

I think it all depends on the space where those speakers should kick the air.
When in a limited and closed space, the kick of a 4x12" can be too much, specially with powerfull amps. Basses can resonate with a mode of the room, booming the middle-lows and confussing the sound.
For this applications, a single 1x12" with good projection and 3D representation is good enough but, sure, a 2x12" is a good enhancement and not so excesive as a 4x12".

For wider and opener spaces, a 4x12" (at least) is what you need to push the air.

If your speaker would be miked then, just go with whatever it works well for you (sound-wise and ergonomic-wise).
