2 EMG Questions

What's your goal? What kinda tone are you after?

I have an ES-137 (Semi-hollow) that I would like to rig for silent running. EMG's. Line 6 Flextone III Plus (XLR outs and no mic needed and no pedals). I am looking for something versatile to be set up quick and be extremely quiet.

Thoughts on EMG's for OTHER THAN Metal (i.e. Classic Rock, Blues, and some Metal)? 89 & 60? 60A?

This guitar is in real good shape, but I am pretty set with what I have. I got it cheap. I was hoping to make this a real easy rig to set up and take down. Low noise is extremely important for this rig as well (hence the Line 6).

I am also considering installing an LR Baggs T-Bridge (it replaces the stock tailpiece) as well. It runs off the same 9 volt as the EMG's and it gives VERY good accoustic-like sounds.

Also, what is the diff between the EMG 60 and 60A?

I am just looking for something unique that will still give me access to classic rock tones (along with some blues or very occasional metal).

Your thoughts?

Martian, what are some signs of an improperly wired EMG? When can you tell that it is about to blow out?

The obvious is that the pickup(s) and/or the circuit doesn't work the way it should or at all. It's the usual examples: Low power, no sound, hum, whistling, etc. The dangerous is when the battery starts heating up. If the battery starts getting hot, disconnect it immediately!

The 85 is probably the closest (for EMG) to the traditional PAF sound. When I took it out of the bridge of my LP it was because I felt it sounded too "Rock and Roll" and not "Metal" enough for the sound/feel I was after. I think you'd be quite happy with either an 85/85 setup, or a 60/85 setup. The 85/85 would give you a fat lead tone with a better legato, and would't have a tone jump if you switch/blend pups alot. The 60 in the neck would give you a slightly lower output, but is clearer with alot less bass and much stronger sounding midrange than the 85 (ie, think Metallica's clean tones).

Also, what is the diff between the EMG 60 and 60A?

60=ceramic magnet, 60a=alnico magnet

The 60 is clearer with a faster responce to your pick attack (more percussive). The 60A will have a slightly more rounded attack and it's clarity won't sound quite as Hi-Fi, and maybe a touch more musical in some peoples eyes.

Some people complain that the 60 is too sterile sounding. The 60A seems to be an attempt to create a similar pup with a little more warmth. I've never tried a 60A myself though, so I'm only passing this on from what I've read elsewhere.

I am just looking for something unique that will still give me access to classic rock tones (along with some blues or very occasional metal).

Your thoughts?

85/85

Re: 2 EMG Questions

I love the 85 in the neck. I play half of leads in neck and it is sustain city. thcik and fat and warm. I like the big shift.

I am not crazy about 81 in bridge. What I means is I wish they had a 81 with bit more mid and thickness

How do you like the 85 in the bridge? What do you use in the bridge?

Re: 2 EMG Questions

I switched and put 85 in bridge actualy nice. Very chucky and like a PAF but a KING KONG PAF. A bit too bassy though.
