2 pickups with AfterBurner & coilsplit - is that possible?

Hi there,

I'm new to wiring, please bear with me.

I've got a USA custom Jackson RR1 that I'm doing some modifying to - basically, I've got a Bill & Becky L500XL in the bridge, and a '59 (or maybe pearly gates) in the neck. Both are 4-conductor, of course, and it's 1 volume 2 tone. Here's the thing - I want to convert it to 1 volume no tone, put an afterburner or pa2 preamp boost on there, and have a coil split option - not as a push/pull but as a mini switch, but I don't know if it's possible to do that. The preamp will take my red wire, and the black on the seymour and i think the blue? on the L500XL will be the hot output - is there any way I can coil tap the 2 pickups, or am I stuck? And, additionally, if it's possible, what kind of mini-switch do I need? I'm unsure of what exactly pole/throw combinations mean.

I am thankful for whatever help I can get =)

welcome to the forum!!

yes it can be done.

wire the two pups to the switch, then the switch to the volume as usual

wire one or both pups to the coil split what ever you want. you can split both pups with the same switch if you get a DPDT on/on mini switch. if you only want to split one pup you only use half the switch.

then you wire the afterburner to the output. white wire to the volume output, one black wire to central ground, the other black to the ground on the output jack, green is hot to the jack and the red wire is power

Hey,

Thanks alot for the help. I'm glad to know it can be done.

Do you have a diagram?

Here's why I'm getting confused:

Both pickups have 4 wires, so I have that many to work with. Red is used to wire to the battery of the afterburner, and the black seymour wire and blue or white L500XL wire are the hot outputs, so they'll go to the switch. Then, with the seymour for example, I have the white wire and green wire left. Can I wire that to the mini-switch? After taking a rather exhausting look at all the wiring diagrams I could find, I couldn't find one that puts green and white together. I guess I don't really know what these wires mean and what north/south start and finish mean. I realize this is sort of a big project, but if it's possible, I've got to do it. It'll be a monster guitar.

Thanks for the help.

Re: 2 pickups with AfterBurner & coilsplit - is that possible?

for the duncan pup use black wire to the pup selector switch

red and white wires connected will go to the mini switch for coil split

green and bare silver wires go to ground

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_1v_3w_pp

is the basic wiring without the after burner. im not sure of the lawrence color codes so i cant be much help there.

the only thing that will connect to the battery is the afterburner

Re: 2 pickups with AfterBurner & coilsplit - is that possible?

Okay...I think I got it this time.

Basically, what you're saying is that the red wires from my duncan and lawrence don't need to go to the red wire from the battery clip. EMG's diagrams all say to do that, but now I'm thinking that they're EMG, they're expecting you to use EMGs with their accessories, and therefore, your pickups need to go to the battery as well because they're active. Am I right on that? And, if that's true, do I just solder the red from the afterburner or the pa2 to the battery clip's red?

Bear with me, my brain's light bulb is -almost- on!

Thanks
Craig

Re: 2 pickups with AfterBurner & coilsplit - is that possible?

yes that is correct. emg pups need power so they need to be connected to the battery or the red wire on the battery clip anyway. the red wire on an emg pup is the power supply. the red wire on a duncan is the finish on the screw coil.

Great! I got it all figured out now.

Thank you so very much for the help. These forums have always been great help to me, but this was the first time i've ever had something I couldn't find.

Your time is much appreciated. Thank you.
