2 random P-90 questions...

Just a couple pup questions on my mind..

1. Are the Vintage P-90s wax potted? (do single coils even need wax potting?)

2. Why do the Vintage P-90 have Alnico V magnets and the Phat Cats have Alnico II?

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

I think that if my phat cat had an alnico V magnet, it would be crazy bright. The P94 has a alnico I magnet though so it is possible... I guess they decided on the alnico II so that the phat cat would be closer to the Antiquity line in terms of having a more vintage tone.

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

i believe the p90s are potted.

i think the phat cat sounds really nice with the alnico II but i think it would loose it with an alnico V, id guess it'd be too bright and not thick enough in the mids

Have you tried putting an alnico II magnet in a "Custom" model soapbar?

.. agreed.. But then why does the regular P-90 have Alnico V? Does it have to do with the shape/constuction being different?

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

i dont know actually, ive never taken apart a phat cat to see how its put togeather but a vintage p90 has two magnets

Wonder what it would sound like with one of each?

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

I think I asked Evan if they had tried that (2 diff mags in one P-90) and he said they did and it sounded like crap.

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

I tried an Alnico 3 with the Alnico 2 in my Phat Cat (neck), and it still sounded really good, though not quite AS good.

I also tried on Alnico 4 with the Alnico 2, with the 4 on the neck side of the poles. It got big and boomy and a little muddy, so it would be even worse with Alnico 5.

Seymour picked right when he chose A2.

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

So I understand why the Phat Cats and Antiquities have Alnico II - it sounds good.

Why, then does the Vintage have Alnico V? I guess that's what Gibson uses/used in the stock P90s.. is that the main reason?

I think that clarity might have been a motivating factor. Godin was so concerned with clarity that in their LG P90 model, they actually have a neck pickup stock in the third. It's very bright and very scooped sounding.

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

never thought of p90s as scooped sounding. in fact, i do found them to be pretty middy pickups with clarity.

Put the Seymour Duncan Custom Neck P90 in the bridge of your guitar and see what happens.

Re: 2 random P-90 questions...

i did in my slingshot. too middy. maybe its the guitar. went with a sp90-1b instead.
