2 single coils to make humbucker

Has anyone tried putting two single coils (one RWRP) in series right next to each other to make a humbucker?
When you split it you'd have an authentic single coil sound at the very least but how did/would it sound together?

Rio Grande makes a line of humbuckers that are actually their singles tied together as a humbucker in this way SD makes the stag mag. They all work extremely well and sound really good.

The Rios come in basically 3 strengths from a vintage 50's style to a modern over wound single style sound they are incredible in all their modes. The stag mag is just the same i wouldnt say one is better than the other pick the flavor you like and have at it. Heres a couple links for you.

I have done that procedure with two stacked humbuckers. In the guitar I have an original DP103 PAF at the bridge, a Virtual Vintage Heavy Bluess II at the middle, and a Virtual Solo at the neck. I had to trim the pickups as you can see in the pictures but they work fantastic! I have installed a 5-way rotary switch in the guitar as well. The pups sound great by themselves and together they make a syrup-thick neck pickup! I am very pleased with the result!

I also have a DC135 with an HS-3 in the bridge and middle with the top coils split and wired as a humbucker along with a non-split HS-2 at the neck. The HS series split very, very well so this configuration sounds great as well. However I don't do any splitting on this one aside from the splitting of the top coils to wire the 'bucker.

Re: 2 single coils to make humbucker

I did it with a couple of Jackson J100 singles. I removed and inverted the pole pieces in one coil so they wouldn't repel each other, but wasn't sure if one coil was RW.

Sounded ok split, but could stand to have an on-board compressor/booster just because J100s were never really all that powerful to begin with.

I remember that post. You too used a 6-way rotary for the four pups you had right?

This is awesome, I've wanted to try this with a couple quarter pounders for years.

Re: 2 single coils to make humbucker

Me too, actually. I have been surprised that the quarter inch pole pieces haven't really hit Duncan's guitar humbuckers main line...

Yes, I too have wondered why the company has not made a humbucker with these specs in mind.

King IzzO: Will you be trying out this procedure with some Quarter Pounders?

Re: 2 single coils to make humbucker

Someone needs to make a Hot Rails/Cool Rails hybrid now.

Re: 2 single coils to make humbucker

I've not done it Stag Mag style, with the two singles in a humbucker ring. But I have wired a Strat bridge+middle in series. It's nice and loud, and real creamy for leads...but to tell you the truth it's a bit too mushy for rhythm IMO. No high end to speak of at about 13K. But I didn't want to completely give up the Strat bridge pickup tone by installing a bona-fide humbucker by the bridge, and I also wanted to keep the guitar looking stock. It's a decent compromise, but not a tone I use all that much.

Yeah, the split middle and bridge HS-3s on my DC135 sound loud! I really dig the sounds it gives and it complements the HS-2 at the neck really well. I still need to do this with true single coils though.

I just may.

Another thing I've been thinking about, I've got a couple invader coils, a 490R stud coil, and some 500T spacer mags, I might try a hybrid with a spacer ceramic on one coil and some rod magnets in the other coil. I don't know what it would do, but it might be interesting to try.

put a spacer mag on each side of the humbucker coil. Might be like a p90. Be like your own custom p rail

Re: 2 single coils to make humbucker

I still want a combination of the trisonic and the alumitone singlecoil size in one humbucker rout. it can fit, but it's so darned expensive ;)
