20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Scott Olson

SD Media Manager
Here's a collection of twenty random observations & facts about Seymour Duncan (the man) I've learned over the years. Feel free to add yours!

1) Originally from New Jersey
2) Worked at the Fender Soundhouse for some amazing guitarists
3) Just about any conversation with Seymour somehow involves the Yardbirds.
4) If you ask him 'What is tone?' prepare to get the most amazing 30 minute answer that goes into every minute detail of a guitar, signal and delves into the philosophical and physics.
5) Will never say anything bad about anybody, ever.
6) Even if you haven't seen him in 10 years, upon seeing him again he will call to you by name and by some miracle of memory will then ask how your wife and children are doing by name.
7) Loves to collect arrowheads and Firefighting helmets.
8) Big Danny Gatton fan
9) Has jammed on stage with Yngwie & Slash
10) Has several signature styles to his playing, which include a sort of chickin' pickin and bending the string behind the nut.
11) Loves his TeleGibs: http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/seymour-w-duncan/my-new-cherry-red-tele-gib/
12) Was devastated as a child when his parents bought him an accordion instead of a Silvertone
13) Seems to know everyone who was involved in the '60s and '70s music scene and how they all relate with each other.
14) Owns the original Gibson PAF that Seth Lover created
15) Likes to take nature pictures
16) Hung out with Jimi Hendrix and wound pickups for him on several occasions.
17) Takes meticulous notes
18) Has a jar in his office filled with 30 year old pickle juice, with a pickup submerged and signatures from him and Billy Gibbons testing over the years.
19) When it comes to pickups & guitar construction, he's a never ending encyclopedia.
20) Rewound his first pickup on a record player as a result of an accidental wire break from lending his guitar to a friend.

I heard he worked for Might Mite before starting his own company, is that true?

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

If its true, they can replace the repeated Tele Gib fact so its actually 20 and not 19 ..... ;-)

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

No, he never worked for Mighty Mite.

However, he once was a puppeteer.

He worked for George Clooney's dad in Cincinnati.

And his dad worked with Bruce Willis' dad at DuPont in New Jersey.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Little know fact #21: Seymour willed his beloved TeleGib to Securb because he thought Securb was the coolest GD person he had ever not met. That and a 30 year old jar of pickle juice for some reason.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Judging him only by I have experienced with what he has produced, two thumbs up.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Didn't he own the "0001" Strat that Gilmour had, too?

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

#22, The most interesting man in the world asks Seymour for advice. #23 Owns the winding machine Seth used.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

What has Seymour been up to lately? Is he still involved with R&D? Handling the business end of things?

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Interesting stuff about that Strat. Certainly Charvel would have replaced the body, but I doubt the plate, unless asked to, or if they thought it needed replacing. At that time, it was just a hunk of steel with a number.

Re: 20 Random Seymour W. Duncan Facts

Certainly the Duncan Co. doesn't feel the same with Cathy at the wheel... at least from afar.

How's he feeling about his back-chair position anyway? I can't imagine a person like him not hurting...

May we have some insight?

Actually, Cathy has been running the day-to-day from the beginning. Seymour has always been the guy tinkering around in the custom shop, re-winding ancient pickups, coming up with new product ideas, and hanging out with artists. In my 20+ years, I could probably count on one hand the number of times Seymour sat in on a management meeting. That part of the business just never interested him.

Hmmm . . . yet another tone secret from the man. I wonder what this one sounds like. :scratchch

Hey Evan. This is going to be a long shot, but maybe you might have an inside track on a question that can't be found on the whole of the internet.

The origin of the color "Daphne Blue." I know it came from DuPont, and was first coined for the color of the 1953, (maybe '58), Cadillac Eldorado, but that's all.
Who was Daphne? Somebody's daughter?

He built 35 Tele Gibs and none of them appear to ever be for sale/re-sale. Speaking of the Tele Gib, Seymour Duncan likewise developed the "Concept Set" differing slightly from the Jazz and JB pickup combination and it's a unique sound most strat lovers would enjoy. Will SD ever produce more Tele Gibs for sale???

Sorry its a bit off topic but is mildly relevant to your question... Daphne Blue first appeared in 58 (in 53 the eldorado had 4 colors aztec red, alpine white, azure blue and ochre) BUT the 1958 color daphne blue is the same color code # 20 as the 1956 Sonic Blue. Though they are different shades, I know this because I made a mistake refinishing a 57 Fender Musicmaster I had.

I figured as much, Evan. So, Cathy must've had new advisers in the middle management lane in the last two years, had she not?

I wonder who this/these guy/s is/are. Also, last two-year's new products seem NOT to have come from Seymour's idea tank... am I right?

I mean... so many new products for the Metalhead demographic... is it at all possible for Seymour to even relate?

*I*, for one, should know how difficult it is; more and more of my own customers are getting younger and "louder", to put it mildly.

I'm afraid that one of these days I won't be able to understand their musical language, so I won't be able to help'em with their rig and their "tone" anymore.

I wonder how one cope when you grow apart from your audience, or demographic, so to speak. Or is just me getting older and grumpier by the minute?

Sorry for the rant. :(
