i just got a natural wood colored 2001 gibson les paul special with stacked p100s thru ebay. the tuners are those gibson deluxe plastic green style tuners. they look cool, but they are really really awful. anyone have this problem with these tuners? what do you suggest?

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

They're just a pressed tuner and they come apart after a while. Schaller made those I think, the new ones are far better, Gotoh possibly? No issues with mine.

If you look on eBay you can probably find someone who pulled them off a new guitar. The new Faded Standards all have the better ones.

You can also find tuners exactly like the one's on there, but in a locking version. I cannot remember where I purchased mine, but they work great. 16:1 gear ratio, same footprint and look.

Honestly, they're not that bad. Make sure your nut is slotted properly (or try some graphite powder in the slots) and I would also recommend Graph Tech saddles.

They're really not bad tuners- nut and saddles are usually the problem.

Yeah, there's probably no need to change them. As long as the nut is slotted really good and the intonation is spot on, there won't be any problem with the stock tuners.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

I would suggest getting a tube of the Big Bends Nut Sauce and use it to lube those tuners. Another dab in the nut slots, and a very small dab on the saddle apex and you will be AMAZED at how well your guitar will stay in tune, assuming the rest of it is properly set up and mechanically sound. Tuners do wear out, and sometimes they get banged up--and that can damage the internal gears--making them unreliable and/or hard to turn.

I was having some problems with the tuners on my 1996 Les Paul Classic, and the BBNS worked magic when applied into the little hole on the back of the tuner.

Just don't get any of the BBNS on the tuner shaft.

Good luck.

Nut sauce... Shaft... Chowder? :fingersx:
(I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it... 'Twas the first thing that came to mind...)

Bit seriously now, I agree. Nut Sauce can work wonders. Apply it everytime you change strings for the best results. Oh, and a tube will last for years!

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

Grovers, man. People have been putting Grovers on Gibsons forever, and they work very well.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

No really they are bad tuners. Gibson bought far too many of them and it took ages to get through them all. They simply come apart and work very poorly. Tweaking everything else to the point of perfection may help but if it is one of your main axes definitely update them.

Like I said the last 2 years or so they are using the newer version and they are far superior to what is on your guitar. There is little if any difference in the outwards appearance so if you score a used set make sure they are recent vintage.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

I have a few sets of those I bought aftermarket as Schaller branded and they are some of the best keystones I've used. The recent Gibson nuts were cut pretty rough and needed some work---that solved most of the tuning issues.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

I've had bad luck with Grovers, but Gotohs reallt seem to help.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

Gotohs are excellent tuners, on par with Schaller. You can probably go to stew mac and find a direct replacement, even locking

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

I had trouble with the Kluson style tuners in my '61 SG/LP reissue. They were terrible. I finally pulled them out and replaced them with Grover locking tuners. They're great and even added some sustain to the guitar.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

TonePros is making vintage style replacement tuners. They're likely make by Gotoh, and I don't know what availability is like.

Re: 2001 gibson LP special tuners SUCK!

I have a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Special and the factory Gibson Deluxe Machine Heads, the Low E and A ones, on recent string change the Low E and A string pegs are wobbly (2 of 6 of them), and they slip out of tune no matter how you wind the strings or set up the guitar, I've tried everything, the head where you put the string through came completely loose and possibly broke?! Replace these tuners immediately! I don't know why anyone would want to proactively put these on their guitar. These come stock on pretty much every Gibson I think, love the guitar but these tuners are the absolute worst! I wouldn't recommend these to anyone at any price.

I almost forgot that probably over a year ago or so, I had bought a brand new set of Grover 135N Deluxe tuners and just found them. I purchased these as an upgrade for the cheap tuners that came with my 1998 Gibson Les Paul Special. I've read that there is a difference in the sound, playability, and intonation is this true? I was also reading that the stock Gibson Deluxe tuners are slightly smaller than these, so you have to slightly enlarge the holes?
