2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

My limit is $3k and I am out of space. I have sold off several already. I should have bought Joe’s LP

I tried to buy Joe's LP before I bought my Gary Moore, but he had already sold it. That was a sweet LP. My limit in the past has been $2K, but I just had to up that a bit to get my RI, but not to $3k. The only guitar I "think" I could spend $3k or so on would be a 59' RI in Lemonburst.

When I bought my Soul Food, the guy and I were swapping local deal stories. I mentioned considering swapping my Strat for a LP Studio (which I'd already decided against). He shook his head and said save a few bucks instead and watch for a deal. He got a really cool Standard for like $1300 and his R8 for $2000, both local oh-****-i-need-money deals.

The hardest thing is waiting and saving..... it sucks. But like you said, there are killer deals to be had if you can wait. $1300 for a standard is really cheap and $2k for an R8 is just wow. Seriously wow. I just saw a 2011 Traditional post at MLP Forum for $1450 and I thought that was pretty good.

JB, I hope you can find what you're looking for and get it as soon as possible, you deserve it. Especially now that you've realized you've turned into an old guy. I saw that post in another thread and just laughed and laughed, because it happens to all of us, or at least most of us.

I love my R7 burst, it's my ultimate les paul. Enjoy yours, looks like a good one.

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

Congrats on the R7. She's a real head turner. Can't wait to hear your first impressions.

Fwiw I have a 2011 CS R7 and it has BB1/2. The pots are the same brand and value....bumble bee??

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

So I'm reviving this as I finally heard from someone at The Music Zoo that was around in 2011 and remembers the run. They all had the standard specs for a Historic '57 that year, so fortunately or unfortunately, it doesn't have any "special" appointments. The only thing Music Zoo did was order them in a variety of custom colors. She did say that there were only a couple of Pelham Blue models, so that's kind of nice.

Nylon 6/6 nut, ABR and aluminum tailpiece, 50's wiring with repro bumble bee's, Burstbucker 1&2 pickups. Sort of standard historic specs, although it seems something changes every year. Regardless of all that stuff, it's a fantastic playing and feeling guitar that I'm completely happy with. I don't even have the desire to change anything else on the guitar..... nothing. I changed pickups (CM Daugherty 50's PAF Tribute Set) and that's it. I do need to check the wiring, as I'm not sure it is wired 50's style WITH independent volumes..... but that would be it.

I must admit I was hoping it would have Custombuckers in it, but those weren't standard in historic until 2013. 2011 is when they came out, but they were only available in a couple of high end custom shop guitars. I sort of wanted to try them.

I felt the same for a bit when I learned my 2014 R8 came with Burstbuckers 2 & 3. It was a made to measure run according to MF specs. I've read a lot of good things about Custombuckers. Most seem to think they're great. I'm sure your CM Daugherty Set is just as good if not better. Can't say I want custombuckers in my R8 now that it has Wizz pickups.

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

No, I can imagine not. I know the Wizz pickups are one of the best if not the best pickups for a true PAF sound. I'd like to have a chance to own a set one day, at a somewhat discounted price of course. I'm really happy with the pickups I have now as well.

I would really like to have an R8 too, like you have. An R9 is sort of my grail guitar, but the tops on some of the R8's are as nice or nicer than R9's and the neck size is a lot smaller now vs. the baseball bats of old. I think they're a great buy vs. an R9.

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

My R8 was definitely cheaper than a R9 despite having more "59 specs". It was suppose to be a transitional '58, so it has a "smaller" neck (no shoulders) and flamed maple. MF ordered them from Gibson this way. You can still find good deals on R8s, you just have to be patient.

As for the Wizz pickups, they are truly amazing. I have NOS wire versions and the overtones/3D quality are stupid good. https://youtu.be/75aEU22YELo

^^^That thing is gorgeous. I love the lemon finishes. That's exactly what I want to get. I especially like the idea of more R9 type necks. I can't play a really big neck with large shoulders. Those pickups sound amazing as well. I've never read anything bad about them. Maybe a good deal or trade will fall in my lap someday.

I think my present to myself for going back to work, hopefully soon, will be a beautiful lemon drop R8 with a 59' neck profile. I saw a gorgeous 59' sell a month ago for $3999. It had a killer lemon drop flame top finish. That was a steal.

Congrats on getting your R8 exactly where you want it. That doesn't happen too often to those of us infected with the upgrade bug.

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

That's about what they go for. Luckily I got mine way cheaper. Look for 2014 R8s that have lemon finishes. *Some of those are MF R8s with 59 spec.

I was on the hunt for the right R8 when I stumbled across a deal on a ‘97 R9. I don’t care for the burst on it, but the sound and feel were right.

Did you get it? I don't recall a NGD thread. Pics are required here, O' master of the do it at home crowd.

Thanks for posting that clip. I was going to ask you about those pups. I’ve never heard of them before and well, you know. We are all chasing tone so.....lol

Re: 2011 Les Paul 57' RI Spec Sheet

Jeff_H, how thick is your R7 at the 1st/12th fret? I would imagine that it's rockin a hefty profile.

Actually, it's not. I don't have calipers so I can't do an accurate measurement, but it has very small shoulders compared to my Gary Moore Standard and fits my hand really well. I don't have large hands, so neck feel and thickness are important points of playability to me. I'd like to get exact measurements on my neck, so I may try to find a caliper.

Also, I'm not sure how much the size of the shoulders play a role in the overall feel of the neck. In other words, will a thick neck with small shoulders make the neck feel like it's smaller in the hand? I suspect that it does, but I don't have a ton of experience with large neck guitars. Most of what I've had are more modern C or V profiles.
