2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

I do have 2 or 3 different posts about pickups. The LP seems the muddiest when just over drive is applied. With regular distortion it sounds fine.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

I like twos witch around between single coils and hum bucking pickups. Maybe it's just my ears and not the guitar/amp.

Sorry for all the confusion.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

I own a couple of Les Pauls and I never keep Gibson pickups because of this very reason. Most Gibson pickups are just muddy..
I'd sell em and buy some aftermarket pickups that suit your tastes.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

The best sounding Gibson Les Paul Studio I had was loaded with Gibson 496R and 500T (ceramic set) pickups–never sounded muddy. The BusrtBuckers in my Faded Studio were not exactly muddy, but they were not as crisp and clear as the ceramic set.

The 496r and 500t are fantastic! They are not vintage at all though, in your face rock tones.. I had Burstbucker 1 and 2s in my Studio, I never liked them, the crunch was always muddy.
I have a 57 Classic and Classic Plus set in my Traditional and they are meh.. I kinda like em for low gain stuff but they dont do well in my EVH. I have to turn dials on my amp every time I play that guitar thru my EVH. It's getting ready to get a set of Iron Gear Dirty Torque/ Blues Engines or a Custom and Pearly Gates neck with 50s wiring..
I'm still on the fence about which ones I want.

Glad I'm not the only one who really likes the Ceramic set!

I haven't tried any Iron Gear stuff, but I'm about to get a guitar in with a Pearly Gates in the Bridge–looking forward to trying one out for the first time!

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

It will be the first Iron Gear for me. Brandenburg has me talked into it..
I am a die hard Duncan guy other than the Dimarzios in my RG Prestige which I love.
It's really hard to steer me away from Duncans to try anything new but I think I need to experiment.

Let us know what you think when you get them, I am intrigued! I tend to prefer DiMarzios in the neck and Duncans in the bridge.

Back to the OP, do you happen to know what pickups are in your Studio?

Depends what kind of music you're playing. I can't live with ceramics. Too bright and harsh for my ears.

Excellent point. I play a lot of harder blues and rock, some gospel as well. All of the pickups I use right now are A5 or Ceramic.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

I have been thinking about trying a set of The Seth Lovers. I like the sound clips on youtube, not sure if they would do well in a LP though.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

Tone is a very subjective thing. I am like Troy, I play blues rock and rock. I like bridge pickups with some wire in em.
I like the low output paf thing for blues but that's it. I gravitate towards higher output bridge pickups and low output neck pickups for 90% of my playing. I rarely ever play the middle position on my Les Paul and when I do my JB and 59 blend quite well with some knob twisting.
I also really dont like many Gibson pickups like I said earlier and I agree that Gibsons do all sets don't really do it all.
I'd get on the Duncan pickup selector and find you a new set and sell them stock pickups. Some one with an Epiphone will buy them in a heartbeat and you wont have much money in your pickup swap. I do that every time I buy a Les Paul , I'm getting ready to sell a set of 57s with all the coil split crap and go to 50s wiring. Doing that will get rid of the mud. I have a Studio with a JB and a 59 with 50s wiring and it sounds awesome! I am one of them weird people who likes a JB in a Les Paul. I have always liked them in there.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

what about the Duncan Custom bridge and 59 neck? any thoughts?

That is a good combo too if you like that ceramic in your face tone. That custom is really gnarly sounding in a Les Paul. It has a growl to it.
I like the 59 in the neck, I get a really good blues tone out of it. I am partial to alnico magnets in my pickups. I like that warmth they give.

Re: 2012 Gibson LP studio muddy sound

Alrighty, I think I'm just going to fool around with different pup combinations until it sounds good (to me).

Thanks guys! :D, I'll post again if I have any more questions. If you have anymore advice please let it be heard!
