2016 Gibson

Re: 2016 Gibson

Prices look to be lower than last year, unless I'm mistaken. They also have the SG Special with P-90s back. Always loved that one. I got a 2014 Firebird last year and love the crap out of it. They jacked the price up for 2015, then lowered it for 2016 on the Firebird according to today's Zzounds and AMS emails.

Yea the firebird especially makes no sense. It was $1600 or so in 2015. Now it's $1099? In 2014 it was around $1300. And that's one of the few models they didn't make all the changes to in 2015. Confusing

Yeah they raised the price in 2015 to over 2K and flattened the neck. The 2014 went for around 16 - 17K with a really plush case and a nice soft C-shape neck. The new one is now called the Firebird T, and I'm wondering if they didn't make some other changes.

Re: 2016 Gibson

Yeah, I was wondering what the T models were, but looks like they are traditional features.. Most of the lps are back to regular necks 50's or 60's. They have grover keys, tone pros bridges (finally some useful features) and push pull pots for multi switching options.. I have to say, being a sucker for black flame and quilt tops, I REALLY like this one!!!

Re: 2016 Gibson

Under-researched changes perhaps? Possibly not what players wanted, or wanted to pay extra for? That's where that out-of-touch thing comes in.

It's too bad they didn't do a bit more research, and introduce some of the changes to some models. I think there was some merit to some of the new stuff (the zero fret adjustable nut, the wider board). Unfortunately, some of those things will never get a proper chance because they blew the rollout so badly.

And while I never liked the tuner thingy, it's now going to carry such a stink of failure that it's continued development is probably in doubt. And there may have been some players who, over time, would have found some pretty cool applications for it.

As for the prices, that was their own damn fault. They could probably get away with that in the historic line (which is pretty high end stuff to begin with). But they went price crazy at the exact same time as the main premium company, PRS, felt it needed to go down a notch in price with the S2 series.

I think Gibson should try to hire the PRS marketing guys.

Re: 2016 Gibson

'Built to satisfy all players.' I don't see how any one set of PU's is going to do that. Does that have the 500T/496R set that V's usually do?

the second tone knob is actually a five-way switch that swaps magnets as you play.:beerchug:

Re: 2016 Gibson

My local guitar center (knoxville, tn) got some 2016 les pauls in the other day. 1 standard and 1 traditional.......both have gone to the 2012 - 2014 specs. normal fretboard width, kluson tuners.....and better yet, a PRICE DROP!

I still think $2799 is too high to ask for a LP std.

Re: 2016 Gibson

Some 2016 standards arrived in local stores recently. My friends in the sales industry tell me that they've gotten rid of that wider brass nut and gone back to the 2014 neck carve.

Good for them too, because the manager of one local non-chain store is having to clearance out the 2015s as no one here will buy them.

Agreed. For that kind of cash I'd rather get a Suhr or a GJ2 or something similar. Something that you know is going to be built to within an Nth degree of exacting specifications and truly superior quality.

I love how Gibson does that...

"These are how the guitars are going to be from now on!"

*nobody buys them*

"Haha!! Just kidding!"

Firebird X anyone?

I feel bad for some of the smaller/independent stores that are authorized Gibson resellers. These guys pay "licensing" fees to Gibson. They can't advertise their Gibson stock online. They have to buy X amount of certain kinds of stock and keep 'em on their shelves. And now they are stuck with the 2015 turkeys and no one will buy them, because they'll all wait for the 2016 models now. I wonder if Gibson also considered how much this is going to damage their dealer network...
