2019 gibson sg tribute model

Hey guys,

My cousin is considering getting a gibson sg and is looking at me for some advice. The tribute series fits in his budget and the standard a notch up does not.

Is the sg tribute a good guitar for it’s price range or should it be avoided?

$1,100 for a satin finish and the so-so 490 pickup set? He's MUCH better off looking for a deal on a used SG Std.

used is the way to go. save up and get the guitar he really wants, if he is 100% happy with the tribute then fine, if not, save up for what he really wants. out of the 50+ guitars ive owned, i can count the number of ones purchased new on one hand. i can only recall three but there may be one other im forgetting

+1

You should be able to find a used SG Special for $500-700, or used Standards start around $800.

I will say that there is probably not a ton of people who have played the 2019 yet. If he can wait, they should start showing up in stores. But I always advise against brand new Gibsons- let someone else take the hit of a brand new one...you might find the right guitar for you at a good discount.

+1 for the used SG. I would also suggest you take him to a store and have him try different neck shapes as well. Let him try, and be able to feel, the different neck shapes. He may have a preference, he may not, but if you dislike the neck shape, you will ultimately dislike the guitar. You can change many parts, but not the neck. If you hunt on the used market you will find him whichever he likes eventually.

^Yeah, he definitely needs to know if he wants a thick 50's neck or a thinner 60's neck. Easiest way is to go to a guitar store and try both (they don't have to be SGs), then look for used models with the neck profile of choice.

IIRC the Standards have been 60's only for awhile and the Specials/Tributes have had either at various times.

Honestly if you want to buy new get an Epi SG. You can get decent new ones for around $400, but if his budget is $1,100 then if you put $700 in upgrades the guitar will be better than any Gibson within a few grand

2nd epis if money is an issue... And already mentioned, the neck has incredible impact on an SG because the body is relatively light... I have a thin neck 62 sg/lp and had a d shaped epi that I wish I had kept..

Both great guitars but totally different feel and sound.

This is ridiculous. Putting $700 worth of upgrades into a $400 guitar is polishing a turd. A better idea is buying a guitar that doesn't need that many upgrades and isn't a money pit. Epiphones aren't that bad but if he can afford the real thing he should get it instead of wasting time and money on something worse.

Yes, get a used one. If you do buy a new one, once you get it home it is a used guitar anyway. Try a few out at a shop, and then shop around. There's a great deal out there waiting for you.

Another vote for going used. I bought my SG Special Faded at a pawn shop for less than $500 after tax, and it was near mint and only 3-4 years old at the time.

The 2019 SG Tribute is the SG Special Faded ,

$ 1000 is the maxi price in a shop
