20w valve amp?

Basically, I am a moron.

I spent ages trying to track down the amp Dave used here as this is the perfect sound for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTJVTB5XDOA#t=24

Found out with the help of others on here it was a JCM900. Having been out of the loop several years, I forgot this thing would be way too goddamn loud at just about any volume for rehearsals + small gigs.

So I need an amp that's as close to the sound in that video as possible. I'm thinking a 20w tube amp should be fine for my uses?

I found the Peavey Valveking II 50w amp for £549: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nENWWLrFmPY

Hell of a price tag for me to deal with, and there's not much info on it but it sounds pretty amazing. Reckon I could get the right tones from it?

Guitar inconsequencial as hopefully it will be upgraded to something I haven't decided on yet.

Open to all other suggestions :)

Thankyou all in advance!

Re: 20w valve amp?

A used Orange Rocker 30 combo is also on the cards. They sound pretty incredible listening to youtube videos too. Wish I could try these in person but there's no way to.

EDIT: Pretty dead set on the Rocker now. It sounds about as close to the sound I want as I can possibly get, and it's far cheaper than the others I was looking at. Seems like a complete no brainer to me.

Re: 20w valve amp?

I'm 100% certain of that amp now. Absolutely love the sound of it even just from crappy youtube videos!

Gonna be a few months before I can afford it but they seem to go for £300~£400 on ebay quite regularly so hopefully won't be an issue :D

Re: 20w valve amp?

Don't know your top-line budget, but 5150 MkIII 50w might be a contender also. EDIT- oh sorry, you decided. Good on ya. Carry on. :-)

Re: 20w valve amp?

jcm 900s are ok at low volume because they are the modern style of amp that gets most of its gain from the preamp - and in the case of the 900 it has an extra tube screamer style clipping section.
You can also tailor the sound a bit by flipping the low power switch and using inefficient speakers like a pair of greenbacks..
Its really not a matter of wattage when thinking of volume, its about speaker efficiency.

Re: 20w valve amp?

Dave's 900 is a 50 watter and none of the amps mentioned here yet are going to be really any less loud than a 50 watt 900.

Those amps are fine at lowish volumes.

Just get a 50 watt head and a 2x12 with 75 waters in it and don't forget the Pro Co Rat!!!

Re: 20w valve amp?

Gonna be a shocker when the 30 watter is just as loud...

Check your speaker set up.. maybe look into an attenuator to take the edge off the volume... but going from 100 to 20 watts is barely a drop in volume.

Sorry I didn't make it clear - I don't already have the JCM900. I nearly bought one though. :p

Is the Orange really going to be that deafeningly loud then? I've heard people say even a 50w JCM900 is WAY too much for practicing with. If so is the attenuator likely to make it work in a practice-room setting?

The Orange sounds absolutely great to me, I'll be gutted if it's too loud!

EDIT - just seen the other posts on here. That's a bit more reassuring.

YUP, a 30W amp (Vox AC30) can easily be as loud as a 100W stack . . . like mentioned before, speakers play a hell of a gig roll.

Re: 20w valve amp?

Hmm I'm stuck for choice now! Both the Orange Rocker 30 1x12 and the JCM900 1x12 sell for ~£400 used. Both sound pretty incredible. Lots of people seem to say go for the Rocker instead but most of them are on the Orange forum lol.

Reckon the Rocker 30 would take a Proco RAT well?

Orange at the moment is a internet fave while the JCM900's are a bit more maligned. If it was me i would make the choice after I could plug into both of them and see which one blows my skirt up more.

Im sure the rocker 30 would do great with the rat

Re: 20w valve amp?

An orange rocker 30 sounds very little like a jcm900.

If you want that mid 90s FF tone you want a jcm900 and a pro co rat.

Re: 20w valve amp?

Something else to keep in mind is that the major difference between 30 watts and 100 is going to be the headroom and this translates particularly into how well the amp can push low end. Low wattage amps start to fart and flub out when the low end is pushed.

The RAT goes very WELL with ANY amp :notworthy

Re: 20w valve amp?

Rocker 30 + AC30 + RAT = this !
