20w valve amp?

Re: 20w valve amp?

When folks say "too loud" they really mean it's too loud to get most of your distortion from the power amp. The way the 900 is set up, you don't have to. You can be at a very comfortabe volume, and still get great tone.

...

So I need an amp that's as close to the sound in that video as possible. I'm thinking a 20w tube amp should be fine for my uses?

I found the Peavey Valveking II 50w amp for £549: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nENWWLrFmPY

Hell of a price tag for me to deal with, and there's not much info on it but it sounds pretty amazing. Reckon I could get the right tones from it?

...

Looks like you are set on the Rocker 30.

If that should change and you reconsider a ValveKing, you might look at the VK II 20W microhead or combo. It meets your 20W valve criteria, and you can drop it down to 5W or 1W to truly cut the volume.

My VK 20MH competes with my Triple XXX as far as tones go. Easily JCM 900 territory.

Re: 20w valve amp?

I've heard people say even a 50w JCM900 is WAY too much for practicing with. If so is the attenuator likely to make it work in a practice-room setting?
i've had two 900s - a 100w dual reverb via a quad of g12t75s that i used for many years back in the 90s (back when it was still cool to have half stacks! lol), and a 100w MKIII dual master 1x12 combo.
They were fine for practicing. especially the MKIII dual master. Nice spongy feel from the hot rodded preamp was much more pleasant for long hours of practicing with lots of crunch than running a dirt pedal thru my 22watt fender princeton II.

Re: 20w valve amp?

50w and 30w are gonna be the same in terms of volume really

but the 50w has more oomph in the low end that cant be reproduced with less watts. attenuator may be your solution!

if you are dead set on a specific tone from an amp and no other amp will do, then get that amp and not a substitute

I dig my Orange Thunderverb 50 and it sounds great with my keeley modded rat, and can cop that tone in the foo fighter video you posted, it is VERY GNARLY AND SNARLY :headbang: also has a built in "attenuator"

I have to agree 100% with everything that everdrone said.
IF you after big bottom (the the two of us are) a 20W amp can not match a 50W amp with the same over-size (bass amp) trannie as a Thunderverb 50.
I partially bought my TV 50 because of its low end capability !

Re: 20w valve amp?

The Marshall 900 is a master volume amp. You should be able to control the overall volume that hits the speakers by the Master. I have a 900 50W combo and gigged with it for many years. Its a nice amp. A 20W amp is not going to give you anywhere near the headroom you may want or need. A 50W master volume amp is a really versatile amp.

The difference between 20W & 50W will barley be noticeable by volume, what you will notice is the 20W amp will overdrive a lot sooner then the 50 will. The 900 is channel switching so you have a clean & drive setting. Should do the trick nicely.
