23 Pickup shootout

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

That's what I'm talking about. Enough BS, plug them in and try them out... ;)

We are Blessed/cursed to have so many options, when there used to be none...

man, I listened to ALOT of those clips while having my morning java. and suprisingly to me, the pickup that really shined in every amp was the JB

it made every song clip sound professional and familiar...was that Jake E Lee playing?
maybe some lost Badlands demos

I also thought the wolfetone Marshallhead and MotorCity blackbelt sounded pretty good all around.
Of course many pickups sound great for heavy stuff while others do better clean or slight OD.
Anyway cool stuff for sure, thanks for posting!

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

I liked the JB until it got to the Herbert. Then I thought it sounded like ass. :P

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

Thanks for the link. I listened to most, didn't like most probably because of the guitar EQ (liked the riff though). Fave was the Pagey 2.

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

I thought it was a very cool shootout. One of the problems with a shootout of this nature is that, since no EQ is adjusted from pickup to pickup, one pickup might end up sounding bad when all it needs is, say a little less mids, to sound awesome. Or it might sound weak distorted, but if you added a bit of gain, it would sound great. Still, it helps you to get at the basic personalities of the pickups.

totally agree...

still I found it interesting since I've never seen such an extensive comparison before.

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

Or along the same lines, some pickups work better with certain amps (pretty much the same as EQ). And it depends on what you want to play. Grunge? Country? Metal? That's why I hate recommending pickups. It's a crapshoot with some defined parameters, but it's best just to go out and try stuff to see what works for your music and rig.

I didn't try a JB for 20 years and now I really dig having one in my SL2H.

Yes but the point is for each one to be apples to apples. One has to be cognizant enough to figure out what the changes would be needed on the amp eq or the way that there amp sounds.

I have a tube amp with programmable digital presets (adjustable) I can change it enough that the pup is the smallest part of the equation..but in the final tone of things and style of play. I need the pup to help accentuate the tone.

I am appreciative of somebody to take the time to sample a bunch of different pups from different manufacturers.

Re: 23 Pickup shootout

You can always use the EQ on your computer to make adjustments while your listening ;)

IIRC they list the PG with an A5 mag, but should be A2.

Well, you can't adjust the amp's EQ for each pickup for this type of thing. Actually you can't even use an amp, because not everyone will have the same amp. This sort of thing should be done direct with no tonal influence from amps, cabs, and mics/mic placement.

While it does give you a rough idea of a given pickup's EQ curve and output volume, both are also tainted by the amp, mic, and mic placement.

There's really just too many variables to do this sort of comparison - player's tone, guitar being used, amp, mic, mic placement, compression/alterations for web compatibility, as well as the speakers each person listens on. It's like trying to show colors online - each person's monitor is going to have a different opinion of a given color.

it'd be cool for something like this to be done with all DI's. and then theyd post the DIs and people can try them with whatever VST & impulses they want. or actually re-amp them and mic it.

regardless, this is pretty **** cool too.
