2nd Build Pictures

Here is the initial assembly of my 2nd Warmoth Build. The photos aren't very good, but I'll upload better ones soon. This is real lightweight guitar. I haven't plugged it in yet, but it's beautifully resonant acoustically with just the strings. I opted for a single volume and tone knob. There's a 3-way switch slot that doesn't show up in the pics. The frets are also gold colored too as I opted for the GD6100 frets because they look cool, match, and last almost as long as stainless steel. I'm a bit disappointed because I thought all of the gold hardware would stand out but it's much more low-profile than I thought. The quilt on the body and flame in the neck takes away from the powdery luster of the gold hardware. I'm also disappointed with the dullness of the satin neck, but like before, it will get the slightest shine when I apply a little wax. Overall, however, I'm very pleased with this classy guitar. Zhang pickups aren't finished yet so a Fender DH-1 will go in the bridge temporarily. More (better quality) pics to follow soon...

Nice work, here are some of my in process guitar builds…
(All are completed, but I haven’t taken more photos yet)

Re: 2nd Build Pictures

Nice axes, all. I'm planning a Warmoth build myself with overall looks very similar to the OP's, black dye on quilt with a pearl PG and Q-sawn one piece maple neck. Black hardware instead of gold, though.

I can't decide between the subtler basic black dye and the washed black dye. The washed dye really makes the grain pop on the quilt, and with the edge blending it's very blackburst-y which is kind of what I wanted, but it's, well, kind of washed out. The straight black dye is much subtler; still accentuates the grain but not nearly as much. Not sure it'll really show well under normal room lights (your pictures are evidence it won't), and against a pearl PG I fear it'll totally disappear under house lights. Still saving up the $1300 for the total build, so I have time to mull it over.

The quilt on the top one looks really cool. Is that a Chopper in your Tele?

In pictures, the black quilt looks rather low profile, but it really stands out when you look at it. I was a bit surprised. It kind of takes away from all of the gold hardware. I was hoping the gold hardware would stand out a bit more. I'm wondering if a matte finish would have been better.

Love that black quilt!! Ive always wanted a black quilt axe. maybe I should build one

Re: 2nd Build Pictures

The best fix for those satin finish necks is a lump of 0000 wire wool. My first Warmoth neck was much like yours when got and I thought me and it would never get along - a good brisk rub down with the wire wool got it beautifully smooth to the touch and lightning fast. Forget about the oil/wax or whatever.

Re: 2nd Build Pictures

That should come out nice.

Satin finishes are dull. It's not gloss. I agree with the 0000 steel wool method. That'll make the neck baby butt smooth and with some play it might get a little shine on it.
