2nd RID JAM!!

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
After hearing the new batch of Rid's backing tracks, the one that stood out the most was the "Heavy Backing" one ... rhythmically, it reminded me a lot of Jake E Lee-era Ozzy ... It's a very long backing track (at 3:48, 2.74MB), so I decided I would do a verse/chorus/solo approach. There are 2 variations to the verse riff, and I alternate between them to give the track a little variety. WHAT A FUN TRACK TO PLAY ALONG WITH!! The 1st solo is over the verse section; the 2nd solo is over the chorus ...

Performance notes: I played my snakeskin Wayne Rock Legend into my Korg PXR4, set to my usual "2001" preset, with no alterations made to the preset. Pick is a Dunlop Ultech.

I literally walked in the door after driving 500 miles from Virginia this evening and started playing guitar, so what you're hearing is me after not having played (or slept) for 3 days ... it's a bit rusty in some spots, but what a great way to get the fingers "flyin' high again"!! :D

haha you can tell this is you in your element

sick track man i really enjoyed it, nice tone too

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

That was very cool. That is the best thing I have you do so far TO. Nice.

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

What a piece. I also think this is one of your best clip. You turned the backtrack into a song, litterally. You really have a catchy playing, always very melodic even if it's hard rock, I really dig that.

Rusty, eh? C'mon TO... ;)

This Korg recorder has an amazing tone... I think of buying one sometimes, because I can't stand recording in front of a computer, I wish I could just record in a friendlier environment than my home office.

Thanx, Nuntius! When are you gonna put some of your wailing on this one?!!

In my element?! Hells yeah!!

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

"Just came in the door, blah blah blah...." I'm hearin' but I ain't believin' :laugh2: :laugh2:

Okay, go rest up and take another crack at it... roll out the big cannons. If this is you after 500 miles, then a track after a good night's sleep should be nothing short of phenomenal.

Like Sly D said, it sounds like a song. Sounds like you were totally in the zone, maybe the fatigue got you right where you needed to be in order to "channel". I would agree, this is some of the best stuff I've heard you do in a "jam" situation. You sound totally in your element. Did I even detect a section in there where you're playing "out of the pocket?" Is that your homage to RID?

You wanna know my favorite part? It's not in the song at all... it's the fact that you can come off vacation, sit down and record a track.

When I come in off vacation, it's unpack, round up the kids, go through a complete post-mortem of the trip with the wife including a session of "he said... she said... the boys said... the boys did....what did you think when he/she did/said... next time we go we should....we need to buy a van... etc" Guitar comes in aroun 9 or 10 PM.

But seriously, very nice work!!! I'll be needing a lesson when you next hit this coast.

BTW, got the CD... thanks!!

Thanx, Sly! My personal rule of thumb is 'melody first'. Technical playing is great, but it always has to serve the song.

Yeah, there are some real cringers in there! At the end of the 'chorus', I could barely play the G#7 diminished arp ... I was totally flailing through that one each time. I had to piecemeal the solo together, as well, as opposed to teaching myself the solo and playing it straight through ...

I totally agree on both points. I can't stand sitting in front of the computer, which is why I will always love playing PS2 over PC games. Being able to sit on my couch and play guitar is just better for my psyche!! :D

LOL! Thanx, Matt!!

After 3 days of being away from home, I really craved some quality time with my gee-tar! :)

Glad you got the CD! Let me know what you think of the song "Defiler" when you have a moment.

:laugh2: funny that wathever part of the world (western world, mind you) the wife/kids dynamics seems to be the same. I really had a good laugh man. So true.

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

My family must be totally off-the-mark to your "typical" nuclear family (father, mother, son, daughter) ... when we got home, everyone sought out some solitude after being crammed in the car together for days on end!

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

Was that in F# minor? Odd key. I wonder if it was recorded on a downtuned guitar, because I can't imagine palm muting the F# whilst doing the rest of the business. I might try to do something to this, but it will just be wanking. It won't be TO, it will be OT (overtime).

Yeah, it's in F#m. I played the Natural Minor pretty much throughout, except for the chorus and chorus solo, which I used an A pedal tone for and end it with a G# Diminished arpeggio run. Not really and odd key, Matt. When I wanna get my Randy Rhoads on, I play in the key of A Maj, which will give you that total Rhoads era Ozzy sound. F#m is the relative minor to A Maj. Sorry, if I'm stating theory you already know.

I would love to hear more metalheads play on this clip! Especially since so many of them opine frequently about other guitarists' playing, and you never hear them play ... ;)

Re: 2nd RID JAM!!

when i get the jacky and the port i'll be all over this section lol. wrote some things down this time too.

oh, bout the clips. listened to the nuntius jam 1st (downloaded faster..) really really nice!

OMFG! what a backing track! is it on soundclick? gah, i cant download mp3's off of it .. anyone care to send it to my email so i can burn it onto a cd? davey@basicintellects.com

love the stereo guitars. nice sound and a good grove. melody is kickass! the tapping solo from about 1:35 to 1:55 just fits the song so well it's unbeliveable. just a minor thought. you could've changed channels/pups, effects for that 'guitar duel' kind off effect =) but thats just me hehe. the outro is very cool too

and what cd is that? /me wants it :D
