2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

Hey guys!

I will put 2 Hughes & Kettner amplifiers on sale and get a 2x12" cab for my Kustom head for my 2nd band.

We're playing classic rock, southern rock, blues and some hard rock.
I've had a look on several standard cabinets and thought that the Marshall JVMC 212 could be interesting:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/marshall_tslc212_gitarrenbox.htm

It's loaded with a Celestion G12 H30 and a V30.

The Traynor 2x12" with Celestion Greenbacks looks also nice:

50W cab against 100W head? Should be no problem because I don't push the amp to the limit?

I've found a German cab builder where I could custom order a cab similar to the Marshall for example:

Will the H30 and V30 fit my sound wishes I've mentioned?

Thanks and best wishes, Sascha

v30 and h30 will do what you want, but personally, I like the sound of 2 h30's more :)

v30's are just too fizzy

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

My other cab is a Marshall 1960A with G12 T75, that's also a "fizzy" speaker, how does the fizzyness of the V30 differ? I've heard that the V30 is more focused on mids.

BTW, some favourite guitar tones:

Warren Haynes, Billy Gibbons, Gary Rossington, The Darkness etc.

Hope that helps :)

This says two greenbacks or one greenback and one G12H30 too me.

I do not care for T75 or V30s on their own, but mixed they compliment each other very well. However, that is not a "classic" sound to my ears.

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

I love the Greenback and Heritage 30 combo. I went the cheap route on my Plexi combo, and got WGS.

to me the 75's seem maybe a little scooped with not a ton of lows but a good dose of highs, so the fizzyness is sort of in the higher-range

v30's are just straight mids, plus an additional spike in the upper mids, so the fizzyness is sort of "all over". It seems like they make things sound more distorted than they are and not in a way i enjoy at all

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

i run the v30/g12h30 combo in my 2x12 and love it. loud, punchy and thick.

classic rock, southern rock, blues

is pretty much what i play

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

It really depends on the cabinet I've found with V30s...Personally I Love em...A V30 and a G12 Heritage is a nice pairing...V30s need to break in alot before they sound best..I've used V30s in my 1999 Marshall Vintage series 4x12 all these years and I don't grow tired of em.

We are also Classic Rock and Blues..

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

IMO, a greenback and G12H30 isnt a great combo. They would sound nice together if they mixed well as far as output, but they don't.

Yep, G12H/V30. great application for many amps. really shines under gain .

For A JMP/JCM800,the epitome of a Southern Rock amp, Id pick a straight G12H/30 though.

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

Thanks for your answers!

I've sent a mail to the cab builder (TT cabs) and he said that a 60W cab would be too less for my 100W amp - I can't believe that because the 100W are not fully used.

Most of you recommend a double H30 or H30/V30 set.

There are also WGS speakers (Reaper 55 Hz) and Jensen Neodym - any opinions?

You aren't going to really running 100 watts into the speakers though right? Also...The higher the SPL rating of the speakers, the more efficient(louder they are).

Yeah that's what I meant. So a 60W cab would work without problems?!

You should be ok...Just don't go too crazy on the volumes...You're always better having speakers over rated compared to the amp,but again, depends on how loud you'll have the amp?

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

I Know Brian May loves the Alnico Blue series speakers in his AC 30s and I'm sure he's pushing those speakers to near killing limits...They were only 15 watt speakers..An AC 30 is a very loud amp for 30 watts though...Just be careful.

Re: 2x12" cabinet - which speakers?

Or just do what I did. Take an Eminence Governor and an Eminence Wizard together. You ought to get the power handling and the tone you need.

Huh?

Are you thinking this speaker?

I am talking about this speaker (which sounds great paired with a G12M25)

You have to match up the 55hz bass cones of the H30 with the 75hz lead cones of the greenback.

Celestion can call the current speaker a G12H30 all they want, but it not even the same thing.

To be honest, Ive never heard them I'm just going by what ive read..theres more than a little feedback about pairing the two-old or new, and a lot of it is negative. Then agan, i know you have some primo gear, so its good to know a different credible story about it.

People complain about "cone cry" with alot of the Celestion series speakers, but I guess my ears of gotten used to it over the years,or I'm just that deaf... ;o)

Cone Cry, Ghost Notes, Edge Yowl
Context: I replaced that speaker because it had too much cone cry.
Description: As the speaker cone is vibrated by the voice coil, it can generate frequencies of its own that may be strong enough to be audible along with the intended note or signal from the musical instrument. These notes or tones may or may not be harmonically related to the intended note, and in some cases may be either higher or lower in frequency than the intended note. This usually means that the voice coil is driving the cone so hard that it is overcoming any damping and is essentially out of control. Sometimes manufacturers use huge magnets and loose spiders so they can win the 'sensitivity ratings' contest, but the result is a system that is difficult to control. Edge yowl is the term used to describe sounds that occur when the surround resonates, imparts energy back into the cone, and generates tones and notes that may or may not be harmonically related to the intended note.

Two of my 4x12s are loaded with an X of greenbacks and H30s. All of the speakers are from the '70's, but I think you could achieve close to the same thing with heritage Celestions.

Dankstar has played through all my cabs, and he can offer another opinion.

Hey guys!

Today I've bought the Traynor Iron Horse 2x12 cab loaded with Celestion Greenbacks, I compared it with the Marshall (V30 + H30) and I knew that the Traynor is the way to go.

I love the sound of the Greenbacks, it's dirty, dynamic and just pure rock 'n' roll.

As you said, I'll be careful with the volume knob and all should be ok.

Thank you friends!
