2x12 vs 4x10

Looking for Real Life
whats the difference? like sound, volume, im not sure exactly what to ask but im debating the hot rod deville 4x10 and the 2x12. I play, hmm, lots of hardcore punk, but also indie rock, so i need a good clean channel, but when i kick on the drive(external) i need it to sound pretty mean.

also, how many solid state watts are equal to 60 tube watts, like volume wise.

I used to have a Peavey Classic 50/410 and traded it in on a Classic 50/212. I play Country and fo my tone, the 212 model fit me better. The 410's had just a bit too much mids and not enouh high end sparkle. Some say 10" speakers have a much quicker response. While that is true, especialy when dealing with 15"speakers, I couldn't tell a difference when I switched from the 410 model to the 212 model. I like the topend of the 12" over the 10".

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

60 tube watts are equal to about 180 ss watts. BTW, if you are close miking your amp, the 12's will give you a fatter sound.

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

i don't plan to mic it, the venue i play at is big, but not REALLY big, lots of people use 100 watt solid states & it works fine. Which one would be closer to like marshall tube sound, i like the cleans on them but thats about it. For reference lets say its an avt150 thru a 1960 cab

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

The Hot Rod series won't get you a Marshall sound. They're great amps but not Marshally. Marshalls use 412 closed-back cabinets. The tubes in Marshalls are different too.

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

As far as cleans, the Hot Rod is great. It's not a Blackface sound but nice. I like it a lot better than the Marshall clean. Just put a good OD/dist box in front of the Hot Rod.

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

yeah, i was thinking rat2, definately some kind of analog, i'm guessing digital would sound even worse thru a tube than a solid state

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

for what you do, id go with the HR Deville with 2 12" Vintage 30's and some quality tubes. The GT's sound OK, but are a bit too hard and brittle for me. Personally, I think that the new ElectroHarmonix 6L6's and 12AXT's sound really good for an inexpensive, mass produced tube.

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

yeah i need to be able to play over drums & bass & vocals & all that. I prolly won't be able to replace the tubes for awhile, and even when i could afford it, i'm buying a rat2 and a danelectro dan echo, so it'd be like a month or 2 after i got the amp before i'd consider new tubes. A link to them would be appreciated tho

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

A 4x10 is very punchy. Great for clean Blues with a Strat, if it's the Right 4x10....:)

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

Go for 2x12. Ideally, replace the stock speakers with celestion vintage 30s a little later on as Benjy suggests.

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

i'd say go for 2 x12's mainly becasue they seems to look better to me just a personaly prefeences. I dont know about sound differnces,

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

i really don't want a blues sound. How much are these speakers? and will i be fine with the stock ones for awhile?

Re: 2x12 vs 4x10

Definitely 2x12, i was shopping for that same amp once and tried them all and the 2x12 impressed me more than the 4x10. It sounded much thicker and fatter, and warmer, which to me is much much better.
